I don't see any pics in this thread of what the screen looks like when the camera fails. Mine had been pizilating and getting caught between frames on occasion and I'm wondering if that's what y'all are complaining about. Keep meaning to take a picture and post it when it happens, but just haven't taken the time.

No picture necessary. That's one of the problem listed in the 9/20 TSB. I had that occur a few times about 3 years ago....and that occured before I started getting the black screen in reverse. At the time I sort of chalked it up to some hot humid days in NYC but then it seemed to occur other times as well. About the same time Mazda suggested that gadgets plugged into the 12volt plug in the console, might cause that issue. The issue was random so I couldn't really determine if unplugging fixed it because the problem always seemed to correct itself the next time I started the car. I haven't had that issue in over a year. The issue is you most likely would not be able to replicate the problem at the dealership as happened to so many here....could be a bad screen, but since the hatch issue has now received it's own TSB, that could more likely be the issue. When you start getting a black screen in reverse, you'll know.

Your description of various symptoms sounds exactly like mine, including the occasional black screen. I guess one of these days I should get into the hatch and see if I can fix it. It just hasn't been consistent enough to make me want to rush into it yet. PS: It does seem more likely to occur in hot weather, but not always.

Mazda recently issued a TSB regarding the rear camera on the 2014-2018 HB models as well as the 2016-2019 CX-3, which also has the camera in the hatch, that might apply to some of those issues posted in this thread.

Wow -- I haven't been in here for a very long time, but this post describes our recent problem with our '15 exactly. Thanks for posting it; now I know exactly what to do.

I just did "the fix" on my '18 HB and, I have to say, it's not terribly convincing. I mean you have to take it on faith that the (relatively) loose positioning of the cable allows it to compromise the electrical connection of the plug on occasion and that stabilizing it by taping the cable to the sheet metal of the hatch works some kind of magic. So far, so good, but mine wasn't scrambling the camera signal that often, so I'll have to wait and see if it's fixed for good.

If you had watched the cmu while playing with the wires, you'd be a believer too. Put mine in reverse with the engine off while I fiddled with it and yes I was able to reproduce the failure described in the TSB. If you look at the wires, the problem is that the cable that comes off the main harness in there for the backup camera is just too long and not secured enough. The weight of it bouncing around causes a bad connection.

Well it's encouraging that you were able to replicate the problem while conducting the fix. But your description of why the problem occurs is not telling me anything I hadn't figured out for myself. It's just hard to believe that flimsy little cable bouncing around in a fairly narrow body cavity could wreak that much havoc. But, I hope that's what it is!

well i can't say it'll fix it long term for sure, but look at it this way: pretty soon we'll both know :)

So for any of you non believers out there that think such a little innocuous thing like a loose flimsy wire could cause so many headaches for us all and that the fix is just way too simple and cheap....I'm 10 days out since fixing mine and no failures and working as it's suppose to. For the last 2 plus years, mine failed more as time went on till it pretty much failed every time I closed the hatch, never knowing when it would come on again.

Again, the only thing I find hilarious about all of this are all the screens Mazda replaced and customers continued to eventually have the same problem. Even my local Mazda dealership wanted to replace my screen.

I did the backup camera TSB at home, when I pulled apart the connection a bunch of white corrosion fell out of the connectors. I cleaned it with some electrical contact cleaner, added in some dielectric grease and haven't had any issues since. Before this the camera would not come on, come on all messed up, etc.

Umm..... If you have this issue and it's intermittent. Check your hatch opening switch, if the rubber seal is split. This will cause issues since it's wired in series with the camera. You'll need to change out the whole switch. It's about a 72 dollar part and about an hour maybe 2(if you do it yourself) to swap it out. If you do it yourself, get a bunch of tabs for the interior as you'll have to pull the interior off the back hatch to get to the bolt/studs that hold the cover that holds down the switch. If you happen to catch the split switch early, you may be able to tape it off and spray some rubber over the split to keep the seal for a while longer, but expect to replace.

A shop shouldn't charge you more than an hour to do the job.
This makes a lot of sense. I have noticed that my intermittent back up camera functioning coincides with rainy weather. Thanks for posting this. I expected that it was possibly water related due to this but figured I would be siliconing the whole back of the camera. But this gives me a better place to start. Thankyou.

Just to confirm 4 months out from doing the repair....just taping the wire securely to the interior of the hatch. Works without fail. No anxiety of whether it will work or not...Enuf said

If this happens to anybody, where your backup camera feed doesn't show up on your screen when you put the car into reverse, first try a forced reboot.

I had the issue a few mornings ago. I rebooted the infotainment center, and the backup camera feature worked again.

So, before you try any more difficult measures, like troubleshooting the circuit with a meter or taking it to a dealer, just reboot. Seriously!
The camera feed is put on the screen by a computer program, and it probably just crashed.

To force a complete reboot:
press and hold Mute + Nav + Back
Assumed the reverse arrow symbol is what you meant by back - either way the reboot suggestion worked a treat. 👍👍👍

you’re new here. The reboot is generally only a temporary fix at best. You’ll no doubt end up pulling the hatch apart to resecure the camera cable like the rest of us. That’s the real solution!
