If this happens to anybody, where your backup camera feed doesn't show up on your screen when you put the car into reverse, first try a forced reboot.

I had the issue a few mornings ago. I rebooted the infotainment center, and the backup camera feature worked again.

So, before you try any more difficult measures, like troubleshooting the circuit with a meter or taking it to a dealer, just reboot. Seriously!
The camera feed is put on the screen by a computer program, and it probably just crashed.

To force a complete reboot:
Press and hold Mute + Nav + Back

Umm..... If you have this issue and it's intermittent. Check your hatch opening switch, if the rubber seal is split. This will cause issues since it's wired in series with the camera. You'll need to change out the whole switch. It's about a 72 dollar part and about an hour maybe 2(if you do it yourself) to swap it out. If you do it yourself, get a bunch of tabs for the interior as you'll have to pull the interior off the back hatch to get to the bolt/studs that hold the cover that holds down the switch. If you happen to catch the split switch early, you may be able to tape it off and spray some rubber over the split to keep the seal for a while longer, but expect to replace.

A shop shouldn't charge you more than an hour to do the job.

I know this is an old post and I haven't been on in awhile...I took your suggestion tonight and started repeatedly pushing the hatch button while the car was in reverse and voila the camera came back on. However, my rubber seal is not split and looks to be in good condition. I had to play with it a bit as I initially got the black screen with the dim settings icon up in the left corner...but more than I got this week. My random camera issues always seemed to correct themselves over the years the next time I got back in the car, but just this week it didn't work at all...the screen would just stay on whatever function it was on when I placed the car in reverse and wouldn't even get a black screen. This is so cool...I may still try and see if Mazda will replace even though my car is 10 months out of warranty...If not at least I know where to start should I need to fix myself. I did a battery pull this weekend and was even thinking about reinstalling the firmware with the thought the system got corrupted. THANKS!

This did not work tried it three times do you know any thing else I can try?

One other suggestion if that doesn't work...If you have anything plugged into the console charger, SD map slot or USB ports remove all and then, lock the door and walk away for awhile and/or do a infotainment reset/reboot. I found on a couple occasions, that removing the SD map card fixed the exact problem. A couple of times recently, I noticed the navigation did not come on and I just removed the SD card and re-inserted. I do on occasion get the wiggly back up screen, but the problem usually resets itself the next time I get in the car....There is also a known problem discussed long ago on this forum that off brand chargers can cause the screen problem.

Thanks for the info. My 2019 CX 5 also have this intermittent problem today. I was about to try this fix but, as expected, the backup camera worked again after maybe an hour after the ignition was turned off. Will certainly try this fix if nothing else does. Thanks again!

It definitely worked on 2015 Mazda3! Thank you!

Now then guys I have a similar problem with my camera and the reset didn't work. What is a bit confusing though is that it only happens when is raining and/or it's cold. It looks like some sort of a glitch where the screen gets all funny and all I can see is colours or if it's dry (just cold) the picture is blurry and it looks like there is some kind of interference. All this disappears the moment the weather get sunny and dry. Any suggestions for a fix are welcome.

moisture maybe as to what they are probably getting at since it's all electronics...I don't have the split. Maybe it's the constant banging of the hatch that effects the hardware. That's what I suspect in my case since I have diagnosed the problem for the last few days. Now that the problem occurs more often than not...meaning almost every time I close the hatch in a "normal" way we all would without slamming. When I close the hatch lightly or "press" it close the camera will stay on...However, in the past when the camera went out it would "reset" in a fairly short period of time, now it can be hours or overnight. The first thing I will do when I take the interior hatch apart is spray some electrical contact spray on the electronics to see if that helps...it does fix a lot of things. I'm just glad to know the problem isn't caused with some issue with the infotainment screen. A 2018...you should still be under warranty for sure? You can use this post and info as a basis to replicate your problem. Good Luck.

Thanks. That saved me taking it to the garage.

Okay, I am going to reply on this old thread as well. I have the exact same issue! Last year I took it to the dealer for the same issue, they replaced the backup camera under warranty, but now the problem is back. It only occurs when it is cold outside, OR if it has been sitting in the rain. I therefore suspect wiring issues, however my trunk switch is not split, rubber seems to be in good shape.

Is there anything else I could try?

Now the weather has been getting nice here so the problem has not been back yet, but seeing as I am reading people who have the exact same issues, here's hoping somebody can help.

Firstly, the reboot may work till it doesn't (for anything)....Most of us know about rebooting...I even did a battery pull last week. A reboot may fix corrupted software or "loop", but in the case of many of us it is a bad or broken part/hardware.

My car is parked in the garage and gets limited drive time in rain and even though I lived in NYC, never saw any snow or slush.

As I would say in my case, the closing of the trunk or hatch probably is damaging the part. I have no idea what it looks like behind the interior hatch trim, but I'm one to take it slow. When I get it apart, I will spray some electrical contact spray, if appropriate, before I replace the part. I've used it on several switches on different electrical products and it does work....if not, off to the dealership to buy the part....thanks to info from gregersonke

Can someone show the Mute , Nav and back button on a Bose stereo in a 2014 cx5?
This vehicle does not have Nav. Appreciate any help as camera is not working and want to try a reboot. Thank you

By backup camera image was very noisy/scrambled. This was an intermittent problem. I first tried cleaning the contacts that are under the trim at the top of the hatch using contact cleaner spray (by CRC, available at most auto parts stores). This didn't help. It turns out there is another camera connector under trim at the bottom of the hatch. This required removal, in order, of the top trim, the two side trim pieces, and the bottom trim. Cleaning that connector with CRC fixed the problem. It's been two weeks and its working perfectly every time.

Thanks for that. This explains a lot. I had this problem twice in my 3. The first time they replaced the camera under warranty and then it surfaced again later. I pulled the trim and inspected, but found nothing. Seemed disconnecting and reconnecting the camera solved it though!

This TSB has some good info if I have to go at it again in the future.
