Moonroof maintenance

My 2014 M3 sport moonroof sometimes feels like it needs a bit of lube. I notice it when I lift the back end up, not when I slide it backwards. I get a little jerkiness in that movement sometimes. The mechanism looks really clean as far as I can see. I clean the car often and include the moonroof, but I bought it used so have no idea how careful the first owner was though as I said it looks pretty good to me.

I've been researching a bit and think a little Jig-A-Loo might be a good idea, but I don't want to do anything that might destroy any plastic or rubber parts in there. I've searched here for any moonroof issues and haven't found any threads addressing this.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

I don't know for sure - and have wondered about this myself - but I'd suspect something like a silicone grease would do the job nicely. You want something that is going to stay for a while. A penetrating lubricant like WD40 is a bad idea.

There might be a spec in the service manual somewhere. Link is in the DIY forums. Worth a look but be warned Mazda can be really bad about specs for the miscillanious lubricants like this. They specify 'rubber grease' and 'anti-rattle brake grease' for the brakes and then there is no spec at all for door hinges.

High temp, brake pad anti-rattle grease (use sparingly): "Silglyde"; rubber lubricant for brake seals, caliper dust seals: search out WĂĽrth product for this purpose. It is not super high melting point. Both are lithium / soap-based greases with no hydrocarbons (that can cause rubber to perish).

Good to know. I've never lubed any of my sunroofs just door hinges and WLG has worked very well. I rarely use my sunroof as I am not really a fan of them. Maybe crack it at night during the summer.
