Hi All,

I have been looking at joining the fine ranks of Mazda 3 drivers everywhere with testing used 5 year old SP25 manuals. This was on the back of driving an MPS (Speed), but a good one of those are hard to find.

My question: Is it normal for the 2.5L Skyactiv to rattle or sound like its very low on oil or the tappets and cams are upset on its first start to the day (Or night) for about 2 or so seconds? and then its fine? You restart it again and no further issue or noise. I'm not talking about the high rev that it and any other car carries on with when they are warming up, I get that.

A salesman is telling me it's normal. He actualy pointed it out otherwise a might not have noticed. My 160k (Km) twincam makes no sound for its first start.
I started another SP25 on another lot today and it did something simular maybe not as loud, however I was standing in a different position.

There is nothing definative that I could find anywhere on the web. I'm hoping its an normal oil presure thing with these engines and they are good to go.

Maybe you could all listen to your cars in the morning and let us know if you are bored. Cheers in advance.

Normal, AWS (Accelerated Warm-up System).

OK, so you don't have to download something from somewhere else, on a cold start, the car retards the timing a bit to increase the idle and send more unburned fuel through the exhaust into the converter. This causes the converter to start working very quickly, in a matter of seconds. The higher idle usually lasts about 20 or 30 seconds.
This doesn't (or should not anyhow) cause a loud ticking sound.

Great post. My 2018 2.5 manual GT sort of sounds like a tractor when it starts up. Not bad... just throaty and not smooth sounding. After about 15-20 seconds it idles down and all is good with the world. I had a 98 E320 that did something similar except it had all kinds of valvetrain rattle etc... what was to be expected from 285K miles on the original engine!
