My 13 idles at about 650 rpm when its completely warmed up and in gear. I've never seen it go any lower then that. I have gotten in the habit of always turning the headlights on whether it's day or night. Doing that kicks the idle up closer to 750 rpm's which helps to reduce the off idle throttle tip in stumble these motors have. I am annoyed at how the rpm's increase slightly when you lift your foot off the brake before you touch the accelerator pedal.

hmmm. It has been doing this since I bought the car and it now only has 4,000 miles on it so I can't believe y injectors could be dirty.
Let us know if the effect lasts at least a week. How many miles do you have on it?

My 2011 JDM Axela is also doing this, idles at 700 then drops to a little above 500 shudders like it's gonna stall and then goes back up. My 2004 Integra would always idle at 800.
Is your car a sky-active? Is this only happening with those motors? My 2010 MZR fires up cold at about 15-1600 for a few minutes and within 5 mintues, idles pretty consistently right around 6-650.

Per 2013 Mazda 3 Service manual on engine technical details:
  • Idle speed (MTX: Neutral position, ATX: P, N position): 600—700 rpm
Idle-up speed (MTX: Neutral position, ATX: P, N position)
  • A/C on: 650—800 rpm (MTX), 650—770 rpm (ATX)
  • Electrical loads on: 600—750 rpm
Using Ultraguage: I get about 650 rpm at idle with no electrical load. When I come to a complete stop, (I have the manual), the rpm is initially at about 750 - 700 rpm and then it slowly drops down to about 650 rpm. During this transition, sometimes there's a slight shudder or vibration.

My car has 26000km on it and I bought it second hand from Japan so I don't know its history. I think it maybe a combination of cleaners and increase in octane as we have shitty gas in Jamaica 87 and 90 octane e10. Will tell you if it lasts.

Thank you for this usefull info, now I know dropping down to 500 is abnormal

Ok so my car has settled down, here is what I did.

1. Tried injector cleaner and octane boost.
Result: Felt better initially only for a short time.

2. Cleaned MAF.
Result: Smoothed out a bit but still the problem persisted.

3. My Mechanic who works on all types of Japanese imports suggested that the new spark plugs I purchased were the problem DENSO Iridium ITV16 5338.
Changed those to NGK (3789) ILTR6A-13G Laser Iridium as my car came with
FoMoCo LTR6A-13G plugs.
Result: No more problem.
