I'm curious what oil & oil filter does everyone use? And the mileage that you put it through

Currently: Fram Ultra XG6607 4k ATM w/ Mobil1 0w20 AFE, planning to run 8k on it
Last one I ran OEM filter & oil 3K

mind you with royal purple your oil changes should be more frequent.. guys who drag race maybe 3-6 times down the track dump the oil right away.. however royal purple isnt mean for long hauls

Infact from a few oil research ive done Ams Oil is one of the only companys who actually show when the oil breaks down.. Hey if im wrong correct me, however alot of my cousins build and race, from Big V8 Mud rails and monster trucks in Alberta, to CS drifting nd drags in your typical four bangers.. both said the same as far as royal purple is concerned.

Mind you we don't have to dump as much as they doo... as their engines are newly built and getting the shit kicked out of them.. vs your Odd pull on the highway and what not.

Pennzoil platinum 0w20 and bosch platinum filter.

Filters: Wix or Mobil 1
Oil: Mobil 1 or Amsoil
Those are what I have always used with my other vehicles, for my Mazda the dealer changes the oil, I know they use mazda oil filters but am unsure of what brand oil they use.

I stay away from Fram filters also, but I believe the ultra has metal ends on the filter elements not their normal cardboard.

I've only had one change done so far, but I found the dealer's price for full synthetic to be reasonable. I wouldn't save enough to make it worth my time to do it. Only thing would be the trust issue.

They use the Castrol which is recommended by Mazda, and then I also got a rebate in the form of $20 off getting it done there again. So I'll go back. Oddly I did have to be very specific to get them to use the synthetic at all (they said most people just choose to put conventional even in a new car that tells you all over the thing to use synthetic, although that appears to be a US-specific requirement that demands the 0W20), but this may change now that they will have dedicated Mazda service advisors. My first visit was still to a combined Mazda/VW dealership building, and while the service will still be done in the same bays, the Mazda showroom and service dropoff moved to a separate building. At the dealer they use the Mazda filter of course.

Jury is still out on flexible oil change interval IMO. I'm approaching 6k since reset and the thing has been stuck on 50% for weeks since I started checking it....

Well there is no dino/conventional 0W20, and they do not have to use Castrol or Mazda's oil. I also find it weird that they will even allow it because it would void the warranty for not using 0W20/Synthetic.

I do because I enjoy doing it, and I do not trust mazda stealership. Additionally, once the warranty is up they will not cover it if your engine burns oil or fails.

I do my oil myself since I figure it'll take me 15 minutes to drive to a service station, wait 30 to have them service it, then 15 minutes to get home. That's an hour's work.

I can have myself jack my car up, change the oil, rotate the tires, check all other fluids (brake, coolant, windshield), and even inspect brakes, struts, control arms, bushings in about 30 minutes.

I always use full synthetic 0W-20 of the brand that tends to go on sale. Whether valvoline or mobil 1 at 5k intervals. I figure $35/oil change now vs $3500 for a new engine (without labor). It's an investment throughout the life of the vehicle instead of a shock. I'm already at 23000 miles with no problems.

OEM filter (thing is cheap!) and M1 AFE 0W-20. I'm planning to do 5k oil changes while the car is still under powertrain warranty, and then use oil analysis information to stretch oil change intervals a bit.

At $30 per oil change, it's a cheap car to maintain. That's ~$350 over 60,000 miles, or about two stealership oil changes :laugh2:

I personally do not trust stealerships as often times they over tighten the drain plug or do not oil the filter before installation.

On top of that they do not use synthetic on their oil changes, on some parts it may not matter but in Canada 0W20 Synthetic if a must as it drops -35C or below

I will post my oil filter cut once spring comes (hopefully it does)

Also I will be pushing mine to 7 months as Canadian weather is a b*****

Thanks mods for sticky

For my 2014 3S GT (2.5L Skyactive) I'm using Mobil 1 0W-20 (AFE full synthetic), and for the time being the Mazda OEM filter; just did my 1st oil & filter change of the factory oil at 2500 miles. My game plan is to do oil & filter changes every 6 months or 6000 miles, whichever comes first. For me, that typically means I hit 6 months first, at somewhere between 4500~5500 miles.

As a point of reference, I adhered to the same oil change schedule on my previous daily driver, a 2003 Mazda Protege5 (2.0L engine). Only difference is I used the 5W-30 Mobil 1 as that was the viscosity recommended in the manual, and I used the Purolator PureOne filters. That car was handed down to my son and is still running strong with 150K miles on it, and no hints of oil burning whatsoever.

2.5L 2014 Mazda3 here. I've tried Castrol, mobil 1 and Eneos all 0w20 with OEM Mazda filters. The mobil 1 was the worst (and the cheapest at $28 ) of all three with lower MPG and louder engine noise. I can only recommend Eneos($40 from NAPA store) and Castrol (Gold bottles from Amazon about $40 for 5qts) whichever is easier to get for you. You can definitely tell the difference between them and other cheaper products. :|

I used Mobil1 Advanced Fuel Economy for first oil change after the free one at the dealership and there's just something about it I don't like. Granted I did the change in October right before a really cold winter but I feel like the fuel economy isn't where it should be. The engine has some jerky acceleration too, now that I'm about 7,000 miles into the oil. I'll be sending a sample to Blackstone when I do my oil change in the next couple of weeks and will post the results. I'm hoping to get the Mazda OE oil at a decent price and use that and the OE filter this go around and see if there's a difference in feel. The Mazda oil has great lab results compared to the other oils I've considered.

Wow, are you me from the future? I got my first oil change at 5k miles at the dealer, and today, 7k miles later, I changed the oil using that same Mobil1. Can't see I noticed anything unusual on the drive home, at least, but I am kinda wanting to get some Mazda oil for the next time around. But that Mobil1 is just so dang cheap...

After waiting two weeks (the oil still hasn't come in by the way) for the dealer oil, I called the other Mazda dealer in the area and they had the Mazda oil IN STOCK and CHEAPER than the other morons so I changed my oil yesterday, sent the sample off to Blackstone and I'll post the results when they come in!

Looking forward for your results :) You can also post that result in BITOG's forum under the used oil analysis section so people there might be able to give some insights and feedbacks on how well the mazda 0w20 with moly did...

We have a 2014 mazda 3 with 2.5L skyactiv and the current oil on it is the mazda 0w20 with moly with royal purple oil filter...

Has anyone tried the Mobil1 EP 0w20? I was thinking of trying that on my next oil change since its easier to get it through walmart...

How about castrol 0w20 and Pennzoil with Pureplus Technology 0w20? Are they gonna be good for the skyactiv engine?

Skyactiv engines are actually a bit noisy when you open up your hood? Is that normal?

Oil n Filter

While in warranty period I used Mobil 1 0w-20 with Mazda filter 1st two oil changes along with liqui moly MOS2 and then went to Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Performance with (Motorcraft , K&N , pureone,) filters plus Liqui Moly MOS2. Now using Castrol 0W-40 european formula plus liquid moly MOS2 pureone filter.

Got the oil results today.

This is for Mobil1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W20 Full Synthetic oil with a Fram Ultra filter. I have 18,048 miles on the engine and 6,936 miles on the oil at the time of the sample. The oil was used over the past winter, which was very cold, and I used my remote starter a lot.

I have to admit, I don't know too much about the numbers but their comments do concern me regarding the fuel but moreso about the aluminum and piston wear.

I already have the Mazda 0w20 with Moly oil and the Mazda OE filter on the car now so I'm eager to compare the two in about 7,000 miles and see what's going on!

Anybody used an oversized filter? On my previous car ('89 Mazda MX-6 GT) I used a Corvette ZR-1 filter (Purolator L14619) which was WAY larger than the one called for, but fit just fine. (It fits our Honda Odyssey also.) I looked today at the spec'd filter and it's TINY. Looking at that picture the filter element is just puny. The L14619 has a 20mm threaded hole, but there was no mark on the stock-sized one.

If nobody else has, I'll pioneer that research when the time comes. (only 1200 mi. on the car so far - 2.5L S Touring)

My HOA won't allow oil changes in my parking spot (I really need to find a place with my own garage...) so I've been going to the dealer for the Mazda 0w-20 with moly and what I presume is a Mazda filter.
My previous car I always changed my own with Mobil 1 (used Castrol a few times) and Wix filters. If I move to a place where I can do my own, I'll do my own again.
