Problems with infotainment and iPhone 6

I recently picked up an iPhone 6, running iOS 8.1.1, and I've encountered a few issues when using it with my 2015 Mazda 3's infotainment system.

When connecting my iPhone via USB, sometimes it will play the music, but more often than not, it wont play any sound at all. It has no issues recognizing my iPhone or navigating the various folders (genres, albums, artists, ect.), and it always manages to load all of my ~1900 songs and 3 playlists, it just wont play them. If I select on a song, it will load the song info onto the screen, but no matter how many times I click play on the screen or on my phone, the song progress bar wont budge. Even stranger, sometimes when I click play, the progress bar will start moving on the phone and the infotainment screen, but still no sound comes out (mute was not enabled). This problem is very inconsistent, and I haven't been able to pin down a pattern to it. Sometimes I can play a song without issues, then when I navigate to another artist, I can get any audio.

Occasionally everything works though, and it sounds great. I also noticed that the album artwork is always distorted when I'm connected via USB. I've seen other people talk about this problem as well, but I doubt there's any connection between the two issues.

I would just use bluetooth for music, but I get frequent static fuzziness in the background and occasional sporadic blips in some songs. I had this same problem with my previous phone (HTC One M7), so I'm inclined to believe it's an issue with the bluetooth receiver in the car. I know it's not a problem with the MP3 files, because when I play them via the AUX cable, they play flawlessly. In some cases, I consistently hear static noise in certain parts of songs when they're played over bluetooth. It's as if the digital to analog converter has problems with certain frequencies.

I love playing music in my car, so any help with my USB and bluetooth problems is much appreciated. Do you all think this is something I'll have to get sorted out at the dealership?

I could've sworn I responded to your post a few days ago. Must have not hit reply. I'm running version 31. I'll talk to the dealer about upgrading to version 33 when I head out there for my oil change in January.

Just a little status update: I think I may have narrowed down the USB problem to a specific app. I recently started using a music player called Ecoute. It's essentially a better looking version of the stock music app with a track queueing feature added (I have no idea why this capability isn't in the stock app).

Apparently, the infotainment system was controlling Ecoute. For example, clicking the next song button on the console would trigger the next song in Ecoute's queue. I found that Ecoute has occasional bugs where clicking the play/pause button has no apparent effect, and this can happen even when I'm just listening to music with my headphones on. That must've been the bug I saw when connected via USB. I'll continue to use the stock music player, and see if that was, in fact, the problem.

You are not alone!

I have an iPhone 6 (iOS 8.1.2) and my Mazda's Infotainment is at v33.5 and there will be times where the media says it is playing, but it is not coming from the phone's speakers or the vehicles. Usually the only remedy is disconnecting the phone entirely from Bluetooth (or even USB sometimes). Occasionally I'll have to turn the car off and back on again and it is good to go.

It makes the experience very frustrating. I spend at least 2 hours a day in my vehicle commuting an I won't lie, I have considered other cars just so I can have a more consistent experience or at least have the option to install an alternative (i.e. CarPlay).

I've had a similar issue and the fix tends to be disconnecting the phone from Bluetooth. Maybe the car "thinks" it's getting a signal from USB, but it actually plays from Bluetooth? It can get annoying fast, so hopefully they fix this soon.

I've been having all sorts of screwy problems with my '14's infotainment and my iPhone 6. The most consistent one is this: I listen to regular music with the default music app over USB but podcasts over Bluetooth (more on this later). When I switch the input from USB to Bluetooth, it will invariably at some point later -- just a few minutes, 10+ minutes, whatever -- reboot the infotainment. After that, Bluetooth playback will work just fine. I've been experimenting to see if there's an order of operations in which to make that input switch where it won't reboot, but it's not the biggest deal, just annoying.

The weirder one I'm having is with the Spotify app, which I just started using this week. I'll try to listen over USB, and music just won't play without some trial and error and the Infotainment rebooting itself. But the weird part is, sometimes when it does get playing, if I wake up the screen of my locked phone, the Infotainment will connect to it over Bluetooth as if it were getting a phone call or voice commands.

Overall it seems like the Infotainment is unhappy with 3rd party audio apps over USB. Spotify, the OP's app... I've also mentioned before a problem with the Podcasts app over USB where it'll develop an intermittent skipping noise in the audio, which is why I listen to that over Bluetooth instead.

Mine will not let me see my text. It would with my iPhone 5, but not my 6. I have also had issues with the music via USB. Not so much with the Bluetooth. My infotainment version is 27.5. I want to keep the Wifi which is the reason I have not update the infotainment in my car.

Have you tried looking at the iPhone bluetooth settings for the Mazda profile? I wasn't able to have the system read my messages either until I found the solution online. Go to SETTINGS -> BLUETOOTH -> MAZDA and turn on "Show Notifications"

If you already have that on, sorry to hear about the problems.

No I haven't managed it yet (iPhone 6 wifi hotspot connected to car) ... Always get the "network error". I have 33.00.500 in car and 8.1.3 on the i6.

Apparently the car likes to connect to a hotspot broadcasting on Channel 11, which of course you can't force the iPhone to do without jail breaking your phone and installing a special app!

Apparently Mazda are aware of the issue (so my local service dept says) ... hopefully fixed in next firmware update?

I've had way more problems than usual the past couple weeks listening to music on my iPhone 6 over USB. Basically, it seems like if Infotainment pulls up the Song List, there's no way to reliably get the music functionality to actually work without disconnecting and reconnecting the phone from USB. And this is all just with the regular old Music app. So if I reach the end of a playlist or album, and it pulls up the Song List, I'm screwed. I'm pretty sure this behavior began with the iOS 8.1.3 update.

hi guys. i just wanted to chime in. i test drove a 2015 mazda 3 a couple months ago and they were showing me the infotainment and i connected my iPhone 6 to it. immediately it didn't load files or play... though i was able to make calls, etc.

i think this is a serious issue as i'm actually getting a mazda 3 tomorrow and am disappointed as i also have super long commutes and need this to work properly.

is there a bug email or someone or somewhere to contact at mazda to tell them of this issue?

I've had my 2016 CX-5 for about 2 weeks. For the first week or so, I had absolutely no issues at all with my iPhone 5S and music through USB. Now it seems I can't start playback through the infotainment system. I can browse music without any problems. The artwork and song title show just fine, but it won't start on it's own. I've tried pressing pause and then play, nothing. What I end up doing is just starting the playback from the phone itself, which is a pain since I bought a 6" lightning cable so I didn't have all of that excess cord hanging down. I also tried a normal cable that came with my phone and it acts the same. Basically, everything works great except starting playback. In all honesty, it's more of a minor annoyance since once I start the playback from the phone, I can navigate through songs like normal as long as I don't hit the pause button or take a phone call. Now that I think about it, I believe this started after the first time I answered a call through bluetooth. The music didn't start playing again when I hung up. Anyway, just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Other than this minor annoyance, everything else is wonderful. BTW, I absolutely love the new control knobs. It's so much easier to navigate the screen while driving. This was actually the feature that sold me on the CX-5 over a Subaru Crosstrek or Forester.
