Well I think my poor car is sick. 23k miles, mods are limited at straight pipe exhaust ( muffler chopped ), and my audio system(including big 3)

What is happening; Seems like for the past week when I go to crank my car It is taking a tad bit longer or not starting on the first try. It will spin over just not fire up and run. So I have to turn the key off then back on then it cranks right up. If you are driving and turn off

I have noticed if you stop cranking before it fires up(before the issue) you would have to turn the key off then back on for it to crank. I'm on vacation right now, but when I get home I'm going to pull the plugs, go somewere and get them to check my battery(just to mark it off), then whatever yall suggest.

Hmmm. This happened to me a couple times: I tied to start the car, and as it was cranking I slipped and the key obviously went from "start" to "on". Then I immediately try to start it again and it seems like it cranks for a decade before it starts. I dont know what to tell ya man. Its under warranty until they can prove your mods muffed something up.

- Good to know that they key slipping thing wasnt just me, I know for a fact they would tell me my system caused. I only need a few parts to get it 100% stock. That being the clutch cover thingy for an automatic. I cant find it to save my life.

is your car manual? I noticed on my car ( a manual ) that if you start to bring your foot off the clutch a little while cranking it wont start.. they you have to take your foot off, push it back in and recrank.

also could be your new sound system is draining the battery? possible bad ground?
Automatic, should have listed that. All my grounds are good. I have the big 3 done, but not engine to frame.

Nothing else is acting up with the car. So I'm praying its not the BCM if it has anything to do with cranking. Everything done to the car can be explained some how. The RCA would be the hardest but there is no reason to look under my passenger seat. Maybe the scraped paint under the ground mount. I just hope it doesnt get worse.

And let me clear up, the battery is not weak. It turns over just like normal, but I'll try to disconnect everything ive done and see how it does. Thanks for the idea.

This is going to make me sound incredibly retarded but I'll say it anyway. Sometimes I find it amusing to start the car by holding the key in the "on" position then pressing the clutch to make it crank. Lol.

Check your battery also for sediment if there's not 100% contact it takes a longer time to start

Not bad gas. Did it to me today, Twice.

Better description; go to start the car. Engine turns over like normal, no lag or struggling. But the engine doesn't start. If you return the key to the on position and attempt to start the car again it does the same. ( Thought I was SOL @ 12am ) But turning the key back to the off position then attempting to start the car succeeded.

Pulling a plug tomorrow, don't think it will show anything. Along with disconnecting all my aftermarket wiring and disconnect the battery for a while.

On the up note I have had several people ask if I was going to sell my car when I go to basic training, everyone loves the car!

Looks fine, both platinum electrodes are intact, not fouled or anything. The problem isn't your plugs. Could be fuel related, or possibly even the ignition switch.

Are there any driveability problems once it's running?

None at all, everything is normal. Just a bit long time starting.

Injectors? Bad gas? Fuel ignition cleaning time :p
Bad gas is out, I've been to every different gas station possible. Fuel ignition cleaning, is that just the stuff you dump into the gas tank?

Have u noticed a drop in mpg? If one of the coil packs is going out it could make it hard to start but would also destroy mpg.
Well, I've been driving completely crazy lately. So my mpg are down anyways. I'll fill up today and see what they are compared to usual.

Has this problem been resolved or explained by anyone?

My car had this problem before I changed the battery. I thought it was just a dying battery (it did end up being low on juice), but now it's happening again where it either cranks but doesn't start on the first try or it'll only rev to 300 rpms before stalling out. I want to take it to the dealer to see what they say but I have an intake and a Mazdaspeed axleback and I don't want them to blame it on my mods.

Do you turn the key all the way from "off" to "start" to crank or do you flip it to "on" for a second before cranking?

Try turning the ignition on and wait a couple seconds before cranking, and see if that makes a difference. It could simply be that the fuel pump doesn't have a chance to pressurize the fuel lines before you start cranking away.

It's also a good time to verify all the indicator lights light up as they should. If you find that sometimes they don't light up and those are the times it doesn't start, it could be an ignition switch or some other electrical issue. You should also hear the fuel pump run for a second or two when you turn the key to "on", then you know that's working and pressurizing the lines.

You might be surprised how "related" an unrelated faulty sensor can be when it comes to weird issues.

Unless the sensor has nothing to do with anything engine related. Even then, in today's cars, you never know, depending on what the sensor is.
