Hi Guys,

I'm from Singapore and am driving a Mazda 3 2014 1.5 with 6-speed AT. I'm getting this growling noise that seems to come from engine compartment followed by occasional belt squealing noise.

- Growling noise (and vibration) happens mostly when accelerating during low rpm/higher gear (from 3rd gear).
- Very often growling noise is followed by belt squealing sound.
- The growling (and vibration) and squealing noise goes away once it passes 1800rpm or when downshift.

Will be sending my car in for 50kkm service on Thursday. So was wondering if anyone has any clue on what the cause might be.

Here is a link to some footage I extracted from the dashcam.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Mazda uses a hydraulic tensioner. If you look at the tensioner on the belt, is it clean or covered in dirt. If it's covered in dirt it's likely bad and your belt is going loose and slipping when in lower rpms. Recommend driving with no A/C until you get this fixed. If one of them is growling I guarantee you'd already chipped it up a bit and it's ready to fail any day now. The part is around 100 bucks and you may as well replace both belts while you are there. It does require a special wrench for the tensioner which about 30 bucks at the auto store.
