That's a known issue but theres more to it than that. Stock Mazda batteries recharge rate is to slow - AGM batteries are a big help due to faster recharge rates when driving and higher CCA ratings.

As a new owner this is a source of minor concern to me - just picked up a 2014 SP25 and the owner said 'oh it will need another battery sooner or later' as he had replaced it twice and expected it to die again soon.

I guess 2 battery replacements in 10 years isn't too bad but I know they also have issues with the proximity keys if they're stored too close. At my previous job we had a CX-5 which continually had a flat battery and after being back to the dealer multiple times they started storing the key in a different location (much further away) and the problems seemed to disappear. It's a minor quirk, I've had other makes (Kia and Skoda for example) with proximity keys and never had an issue.

Where I store my spare car key at home (with all the paperwork for it) is only maybe 10 metres away so perhaps I should pull the battery out of it to be safe...

Yeah - I mean the car won't unlock with the key stored where it is, but I don't think the CX-5 would either and it was probably around the same distance away. I am probably just being paranoid, I guess we'll find out :)

Glad you are having success with the AGM battery. This was going to be my solution if mine does happen to die - a good quality aftermarket. Not sure what's in it now (I'll have to go and look) but the previous owner serviced it every 10k kms at the dealer so he probably just installed whatever they told him to.

Yeah, the draw has to do with the fob communicating with the car over and over and not allowing the car's electronics to stay shut off. Make sure you hit the fob's lock button when you are walking away.. i do it until i hear the car honk. Should help shut things off faster. Good luck.

My 2016 Mazda3 isport (with 5 year old EverStart MAXX manufactured by Johnson Controls) sat for over 2 months, and started right up upon my return home to Portland in mid February. But 5 months later, battery testing says it's time to replace. 12.55V and measured 567CCA, rated at 800CCA. Surprised me, it still performs fine...

May go with an AGM battery next time instead of the flooded, the EverStart Platinum AGM is about the same price (and has an extra year warranty) compared to the Duracell Ultra Gold Flooded (East Penn) at Batteries Plus.

Don't have i-eloop or start-stop system, and was hesitant at first to go with an AGM battery, but research indicates it won't harm my electrical system in any way...

Try to figure out who makes it. There aren't a lot of oem's in that market. Batteries plus x2 35 series battery is made by northstar who was bought by odyssey. Solid battery, as I'm on at least 7 years for mine with the i-eloop.

I know that the Duracell Ultra Gold Flooded ($177) is made by East Penn, but not sure who manufactures the Walmart batteries sold in my area. Possibly Clarios, which I think used to be Johnson Controls.

I might head over to Walmart this weekend to check out the serial numbers on the EverStart Platinum AGM ($170), to confirm if Clarios is the manufacturer. The flooded EverStart MAXX ($129, cost me $94 five years ago) is currently out of stock, so I'm unable to see who manufactures it.

Quick update, here in Portland, OR area, Walmart has both the Everstart MAXX and Platinum, manufactured by a S Korean company called DN Automotive. Don't know how they compare to East Penn or Clarios.

Optima went to mexico. Enersys is odyssey(thick pure lead tech with the performance/extreme batteries) fewer failures.

There is a trick from mazda cars, a faulty gear selector when the car is parked and the neutral position is selected. This means if you leave the car on neutral handbrake up you are not gonna manage to start it
I have a manual transmission. I'm always in neutral when I start it..

The replacement AGM battery is still going strong for me.
