Engine oil consumption

Hi all,

I’ve been the proud owner of my 2014 Mazda3 Sport GS 2.0L since April 2014. Being my first brand new car, I’ve babied it every time I’m behind the wheel. I took possession of it with 84 kilometers on the odometer, and I’ve been diligent with breaking in the engine as optimally as humanly possible. I’ve been very thorough with oil changes, flushing and replenishing every 5,000 km (+/- 500 km). Also to be said, I do my own oil changes (as I’ve been doing in all my past vehicles) and have kept receipts from Mazda for oil, filters and plug washers each time, using only products over Mazda’s parts counter.

Lately, I’ve been noticing some oil consumption. Nothing serious yet, but definitely concerning, since my car just rolled over 30,000 km of life. In 5,000 km, it looks to have taken half a quart of oil. This upcoming oil change, I will monitor in depth and accuracy exactly how much oil I’m putting in, and how much oil I’ll be draining. I know it is not leaking from any seal or from the plug.

This is definitely alarming to me, as all of my previous cars, even those with mileage beyond 250,000 km, never took any noticeable amount of oil between oil changes. And my car being a single year old, oil consumption will only worsen as time progresses; I had intended on keeping it for the long haul (12+ years, 350,000 + km) if it gets there.

If I had been driving it aggressively and carelessly, I would still be surprised at any noticeable oil consumption this early in its life. But I would like to emphasize that I am the 1% who take the time to let the engine warm up properly before loading it (especially in the winter), I don’t drive aggressively at all, I am very smooth and gentle while shifting (it’s coupled to a manual transmission) and I try to drive smooth highway driving as much as possible, avoiding city driving like the plague. There literally isn’t any reason for the engine to consume oil; I can only imagine that other owners who are far rougher than I am must be seeing quite significant oil consumption, especially since Mazda recommends 8,000 km oil change intervals (as opposed to my very conservative 5,000 km intervals)

I really would like to know what is causing my oil consumption and if this was a calculated factor of engineering with the design of my engine. Does the engine go through sacrificial lubrication under higher load situations? Has Mazda received any complaints or comments about oil consumption on its current Skyactiv engines? And lastly (and more importantly to me) will Mazda do anything to rectify the issue if this is determined to be abnormal? I understand that any internal combustion engine (or reciprocating piston motor) requires some consumption of oil for proper function, but it shouldn’t be noticeable. Certainly not with a new engine, designed for efficiency and cleanliness.

Has anyone been noticing similarities?

Cheers,
James

You would be surprised what manufactures consider normal oil consumption. Acura told me a quart every 700 miles was acceptable for an Integra I had.

Some cars just eat oil. My last car, an 03 Acura CL-S 6speed used none. I hope my 3 is the same.

The super thin oils manufactures are using probably don't help with oil use.

LOL My Integra eats about that much these days, but it's 15 years old and has 240,000 miles on it. I don't worry about it, just watch the level and top it up. Wherever it is going, it has never been dripping on the floor. It burns it, and has burned some for a long time actually, although not when it was truly brand new I don't think, or at least not nearly that amount.

Now if my 3 did that, I'd be a little worried. But I haven't seen much evidence of oil usage thus far, even going out to longer oil change intervals with the 0W20 synthetic oil that is required. I have the 2.0 engine as well, and it has 25,000 miles on it now. I'm neither especially easy or especially hard on it, and it has the auto trans.

As the others have said, down half a quart is probably within normal range, and the dealer may tell you so, but it wouldn't hurt to bring it up with them and see. I'd be kind of annoyed to see that usage in a new car but they may say it's just normal and you have to live with it.

As Paulff3 said the low viscosity oil can be a culprit. I see some owners running 0-30 weight oil which at low temps is almost like water. If it gets any worse I would pull the spark plugs and see if there is oil residue on them. Then I would run a compression test on the cylinders. I have 14,000km on my 2014 Mz3 with no oil consumption. I am running 10-30 oil. Good luck.

A consumption rate of a half-quart over a range of 5000 kilometers / 3100 miles would be considered normal in any engine I've ever heard of.

As stated earlier, manufacturers expect some oil usage, and generally consider a much higher rate of consumption than yours to fall within normal range. Alhough modern manufacturing and materials has reduced oil usage, it cannot completely eliminate it with all that's going on in an engine with so many moving parts and pressurized oil systems.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Your car seems to fall well within normal engine behavior, even if it does use more than your previous cars. It's the luck of the draw. I would continue to use the oil recommended by the manufacturer and forget about it. The low level of oil consumption does no harm, and some would argue it even provides a little "upper cylinder" lube in the process.

I did the oil in my '15 3 last night and noticed I only filled up about 3 1/2 quarts of empty containers... now I did overfill each one, so I am guessing if I add what's still in the engine, what I spilled (which wasn't much), and what I overfilled in each of the containers, would probably come close to the 4.4 mark...but I was wondering about oil consumption myself. Like others have noted, the 0w-20 oil is like water...but it's supposed to be excellent at preventing cold start wear and tear. But also prone to consumption. Especially synthetics.

I have a 2018 mazda 3 gt I bought it brand new with 6km I now have 26,000km. I just noticed I'm down on oil but which I find odd it never did it before it would stay at full mark through the intervals. Any idea what it could be? I went in at 2,500km-8,000km-16,000km-24,000km for service and have been using penzoil ultra platinum 0-20 with a mobil 1 extended life oil filter. I'm really concerned

Unless you personally and properly checked the oil fill on the dip stick at the last oil/filter service I would suggest checking and properly filling the oil level. Carefully check the fluid level. Drive about 500 miles and recheck the oil. If no change check again at 1000 miles. If you start to see a change then your should have the intake system checked(PCV), also possibly a compression and leak down test?

Ok.. so now how much oil to fill back at your starting point? The miles you are driving may be normal considering the age of the engine and how it is used? But as I said you may need to do some checking on the health of the engine.

......driving 4 thousand miles a month wow! :surprise:

Only need to add like 200ml it's not alot but it's still concerning for me. And I do 4000km so 2,500milies a month it's alot of in town but I do go on highway I try to take it easy but once I get on a curve road it's in sport mode sounds good to with the borla exhaust but I'm going to keep a eye on it for now I guess
