DTC P250 Error Code (Low Engine Oil)

I'm a few hundred kilometres from my very first oil change being due and received a Low Engine Oil warning in the dashboard on my 2.5T. Checked the dipstick a few times, oil was just barely past the minimum mark dot (not below the min dot). Dealer changed the oil and pulled & cleared the stored DTC P250 error. Oil up back up to the max dot. No leaks or other issues found. They said to keep an eye out on it and let them know if the error returns. They had mentioned the diesel CX-5's had a similar issue and there was an active TSB for them - there is no active service bulletin/TSB for my specific VIN.

FYI for anyone else who encounters this issue.

2.5T - got low oil level at about 4200 miles. Restarted, it stayed off for about 3 miles and came back on. Drove for another 30 or so miles with it on, shut down for 30 min, went on with my business. Came back, started, no light since then.

Edit: one and it time it happened was during the hottest day of the year so far

I had mine do turn on the low oil warning as well but it was gone before I got home. Checked the oil level the next day while the engine was cold and the oil was about 1/3 of the way above the minimum dot and maximum dot. When I checked the warning in the Mazda app later, the description of the warning recommends to add a quart of oil. I didn't actually do anything as it wasn't necessary, but will keep my eye on it. Only difference is I'm at 40k miles.

I think it was somewhere around 80°F. It happened late at night and it wasn't particularly hot or humid. I had the AC off and the windows down. I was going roughly 40mph and over half the 10 mile the drive was in two cylinder mode. Mid 40 mpgs, two cylinder for most of the drive aside from some small hills, and all green lights with no traffic.

Had the same problem with my 2021 3T AWD. Warning comes on, check oil and it was down about 3/4 qt. Put oil in and no further problem. Taking car in at 4500 mi. for first oil change. I was religiously checking the oil every 500 mi. and everything was fine. Don't know what caused the drop in the last 500 mi. I do on occasion like to get into the turbo but that is what that car is all about. I treat my '14 Ford Fiesta ST even more aggressively and no oil problem with it after 6000 mi change intervals and 52,000 mi.

2020 Mazda 3 Hatch 2.5 6MT

8/18/2021:
Car came up with low engine oil level light and notification on my way home. Was coming up to 5,000 mile interval for oil change. Stick was showing past the min. line, was 1 quart low. Local dealer said it's not uncommon, dealer uses 0w20 conventional oil, I ask if I can use 5w30 as recommended for the 2.5T skyactiv G motors. They responded that it would void my warranty to use that oil, I call bully. I got my oil change done while at the dealer, no loss of oil a week later and 150 miles later. Took it for a long drive no ticks or knocks, seems to be okay but faint oil smell after first 20 miles they may have spilled oil on valve cover during oil change.

See attached image, car is very low miles.

This makes no sense. The dealer told you 5W30 would void the warranty? That's a major red flag... 0W20 is not the correct oil type for the 2.5T.

I have a 2020 Mazda 3 hatchback premium 6spd. The check oil light went on; popped the hood & saw oil was low on dipstick. Added almost a qt. Light stayed off. Today, I brought it in for 15k maintenance at the dealership where I purchased it. It currently has 18,700k miles on it. They claimed the low oil was not uncommon. That at 5k the light may come on & require added oil; may be due to lots of miles driven between oil changes; also because the sensor is “very sensitive.” I’d expect this with an older model with more miles, but not with my ‘20, under 20k. Might contact another dealership for their opinion.

I asked for an update on this issue Friday while getting a scheduled oil change. The service manager said they do not have enough inventory to just swap out the entire head, and that techs will have to replace the valve stem seals on affected models. He also stated that due to the complexity of the job (~6 hours), Mazda would only be allowing their higher tier techs do the work (Master level I believe).
