Backup camera problems after CMU update

So after “bravely” updating my 2015 cx5 CMU to version 74…
I am having problems with my reverse camera and when putting the car
into reverse I see a black screen.
If I do a factory reset on the CMU all works until the next ignition.
This never happened before.

I checked for the error code and saw this error code:
DTC B12BD:87 “rear camera missing”

Best info I came out with is that the CMU expects the camera to be powered on during boot and maybe the wiring is done to the reverse light and not the acc. But I doubt it since this is the original camera.

Save me from the mess I gotten myself into 🫣

thanks for the reply,
if the connection is bad then why reseting the CMU always fixes it, plus it never happened before and started next ignition after CMU update.

I saw a couple of more posts from my region about this issue with this FW version. asked them for the model number.

BTW I still have not installed the carplay unit justed flashed the FW.

Having had a bad connection (known issue with 3 hatch) it often does work like that. Resetting seems to help but only temporarily.

Point is a bad connection is a definite possibility. This is how troubleshooting works. Make a short list of all possibilities and eliminate them systematically.

If you think this is firmware, roll back to previous version. That would be my next step. Doesn't really matter what you do first.

I think it is not possible to rollback from 74.00.324
Currently don't see any way to proceed 😭
no more luxuries of a reverse camera I guess.
Maybe someone will find something.
I've already given you a very plausible solution other than the firmware. If you're not going to investigate it simply because you don't like it, you might as well move on. Troubleshooting doesn't work on what you like and what you don't.

Actually it's very easy. I had mine apart, fix done and reassembled in 20 minutes. Haven't had a problem since. The issue on the 3 hatch is the cable was not properly secured so over time you get a bad connection from road vibration. The fix is a couple zip ties.... however you have a CX-5. I don't think this is an issue with those models but we cannot rule out a bad connection as a possibility until it's checked.

You'll need to get your hands on a service manual to see where the anchors are. It is possible to figure it out on your own without that if you go slow and careful. The anchors simply pop off. You should get some tools for interior trim, they're just little plastic pry bars so you don't damage the panels. Slip one under until you find an anchor and pop up. That easy.

On the 3 the pivots for the strings on the trunk cover had to be removed, not sure if it's the same on the CX-5. If it is, they look like a ball basically. The ball pulls out part way to release the anchors.

The connector should be removed and cleaned with some electrical contact cleaner. Then just put it all back together. The panel anchors just push back down. Take care to line them up properly.

I do know that the CX-5 has issues with the nav SD card. It's contact corrosion. It shouldn't cause this problem but hey let's rule that out too if you have one. Just remove it and reboot the CMU. See what happens.

No SD card in, I also swapped the AA/CP box today, at least I got that working for me. I have the tools will look for the PDF. when adding the extra connector I also checked the CMU cables based on the error I previously got and looks like they are well connected on one side A1.

what symptoms did you get before the fix?
black screen? distortion? would a reboot resolved it?

Thanks!

First intermittent distortion
Then constant distortion
Then black screen
After that it wouldn't even try to turn it on.
A reboot would sometimes fix it for a short time

This is also completely irrelevant because you have a communication issue with the camera and you have to troubleshoot it.

Guys I am happy to say I resolved the issue.
From what I saw it happened to people from my region, they had the local sensors and backup camera install, so I contacted them and they immediately knew the issue. There is some canbus adapter, this adapter has a version and it had to be replaced to a newer one. it connects the sensors and the camera. This adapter located in the left side of the trunk. No need to disassemble the trunk. This info costed me 100$. I guess this adapter probably worth 5$. But maybe it can help someone.

Don't know if OP will answer, but this is what I gathered.
Apparently it's a very common practice to install aftermarket backup sensors and burglar alarm in your region, with the installation they add a Canbus module, picture above.
This black box interferes with the backup camera when you update to a new firmware. The company name is Cobra and they will sell you a new module or update it. If this is your issue research if your car have a Cobra system or look in the driver side foot well for a Canbus module.
