Mazda recalls 494,500 Mazda3/Axela cars globally | Reuters

Nearly 500,000 Mazda3s recalled over windshield wiper defect — Autoblog

According to Reuters, Mazda is preparing to announce a recall that could affect any Mazda3 built between January 2008 and July 2010. The recall has been issued because of an electronic glitch keeps the windshield wipers from working properly. So far no accidents have been reported that relate to this defect.

Approximately 494,500 cars fall under the umbrella of this recall. In North America, the total number of vehicles potentially affected is 157,700. If you own a Mazda3 built within this time period, perhaps it's time for you to stock up on Rain-X until you can bring the car into your local dealer to have the issue repaired.

According to MotorTrend it is only 2008 cars, but parts manufactured through 2010:

The Problem: According to Mazda Europe, the problem affects model year 2008 Mazda3/Axela cars. Reuters adds that the recall covers cars and related parts shipped between January 2008 and July 2010. Mazda discovered that an oxide film has the potential to develop around the wiper motor’s ground wire contact point. The film ultimately causes a loss of contact for the ground wire. The issue is likely due to a deformed ground terminal.

The Fix: Mazda will send out letters this summer notifying owners. The fix will include the installation of a new ground wire, free of charge.
