I recently got my windows tinted and the installer left some streaks on the inside of my windows that have been bugging me ever since. Especially in the morning when the light is gleaming through.

My first instinct was to get Windex and just clean the inside of the windows with it. No brainer, right?

Well, it's a good thing I did some research first. I learned that Windex, and other ammonia based cleaners, can damage window tints and lead to discoloring of the tint and surfaces that it is applied to.

I'm guessing most of you already know this, but I thought it might be good to share what I learned.

I ended up buying Griot's Ultra Premium Glass Cleaner, which worked like a charm and it's tint safe.

I used microfiber towels, one to spray the cleaner on and apply and one towel to dry with.

I use Stoner or Rain-X with a special lint free towel specifically for windows off of auto-geeks for a good while now and everything has held up (4 years).

I almost bought the Stoner brand products, which come in a spray bottle, aerosol and wipes.

As you shouldn't leave a pressurized aerosol can in your car, the spray bottle and wipes would be nice for taking with you in the car.

Yes there are many things I need to go to Nevada now to get.

Xylene, until 2 years ago I could buy at any Home Depot ,Lowes or general hardware store....now NOPE. It is not legal to sell in California.
So I go and buy a case of 4 gallons about every other month in RENO.
Sucks because I use this for all kinds of car related

The guy I go to when I need my windows tinted recommends water with a few drops of Dawn dish detergent in it. That is all he uses when he cleans the windows while he is putting the tint film on. I have some streaks on my windows too. I just got them done a few weeks ago now and I haven't gotten around to mixing up some water and dawn to clean them. lol

That would be good for cleaning the windows, but it would leave those annoying streaks that bug me so much.

The Griot's window cleaner I purchased works remarkably well. As long as you use a clean microfiber towel, there are no streaks or smudges at all.

I'm gonna try the Meguiar's and Stoner brand products too, to compare which I like best. Then I can add it to my detailing supplies that I keep in the car.

They keys, as several have mentioned, is a glass cleaner with no ammonia, and second clean microfiber towels.

Long time ago, I learned one more, do your insides with a side to side motion, your outsides with a vertical motion (or the reverse if you choose). That way when you missed a streak, you instantly know on which side to get it off.

That's pretty clever. Thanks for the tip.

I've had to ask my daughter to sit in the car while I wipe the windows down. She reports spots I've missed and whether they are on the inside or the outside.

Washing windows when the hot sun is on them is a disaster, for the fluid dries too fast. I usually in my garage set up a light (windshield height) shinning at the car, then sit inside, where I can easily see, then fix my “first round misses.”
