He has a short video clip saying as a 50+ year mechanic, the skyactiv automatic transmission is not reliable and would not recommend people buy it, but get the manual transmission instead.

There are some comments posted by posters who say they are Mazda mechanics that back up what he says about auto trans problems..

Scotty is over generalizing too much. You got to look at who is supplying the transmissions, since not every manufacture makes their own tranny's in-house.
Gen 1 Mazdas had some issues with VVT (pin)

Yeah I'm not buying this one. The current gen has been out for over 4 years now. There's a few high milers for sure. Have we had any legitimate indications that Tue trans is unreliable? Nope. Quite the opposite. Even on these forums there's very few transmission complaints.

I've been watching Scotty for quite some time and I've also watched the video yesterday. I think if you keep track of your regular maintenance and make sure your transmission fluid is good then people shouldn't have problems. I think the automatic in our Gen 3 Mazda's are good. Scotty always has Toyota at the top of his head and sometimes his wife's Lexus. It's pretty much his own opinion anyways.

I'm having lots of problems with my auto transmission... I just changed my fluid at 55k and had no improvement in transmission performance. Mine has significantly more torque flare than origionally, very unsmooth troque lock out, and delayed shifting between gears....

I don't know anything about Scotty but my experience with the skyactive auto has noot been good. I suspect mine will need a transmission replacement prior to 100k.. currently at 58k.

My thoughts as well. Its possible that this individual got a defective transmission from factory, happens to every manufacturer. Very unusual with these cars.

I'd be pushing that warranty for sure.

I think he is a very good intention person, a regular mechanic, and a decent logic, BUT his knowledge is limited and that makes his affirmations very limited....

Think he should just make videos of things in general, not specific.....

I know mechanics that know some brands by engine, by us or eu marquet, very deep shit.... cars can vary even by market very much... by one year very much also...

2019/2020 update: he has a "I was wrong about Mazda" video now
where he praises the in-house FW6A-EL solution as much more reliable than Jatco's prev-gen stuff.

I'm considering a Skyactiv CX-5 or hatchback 6, hence my interest.
