So I went to go wash my car at one of those self-service places up the road. They didn't have any fresh water for mixing with my soap bucket so I just took about a gallon of water and set it in the passenger side floor with a towel over it. After washing my car and doing my other things, I drove home. When I went to go take the water bucket back out of the passenger side floor, it tipped and lost about half a gallon onto the underside part of the seat. So basically the water soaked into the floorboard carpet under the passenger seat and a little behind it where the rear passenger would put his feet on. I got most of the surface water cleaned up with a towel, but can anyone tell me what the material is underneath the carpet? The material underneath is still relatively wet to the touch. I just bought the car and I really don't want anything rotting. I have the windows rolled down in 104 degree weather so I'm hoping it will dry up after a little time. What's the hard material under the carpet though? Cardboard?

Wetvac, suck up as much of the water as you can. The car should dry out fairly quickly.

Yeah Chimp I saw a wiring harness under there but it seems to be wrapped up very well. After leaving the window open for a few hours and wiping any surface water, things mostly dried out. Thanks guys!

I never would have thought to ask that question except I used to have a Honda Element. Honda said you could clean the thing out with a sponge or towels. Some motor journalist decided to reword that as you could hose the thing out. Someone tried it. They found out the hard way that the airbag computers and electronics were down below somewhere and fried them.

The airbag control unit in our Mazdas is in that area too, in the central console between the driver and passenger seats. I guess most cars put it there as it's the safest place in the car. The floor is raised in that area too so one would need to spill multiple gallons to affect it.
