Trying to get the best setup for music, so I copied a bunch to a thumb drive and stuck it in the USB 1 port. Was organized nicely and all that, however when I shut off the car and came back, it said "no playable files found"... I had to remove and reinsert the drive; is that normal behavior?

Thank you

No, not normal. How big is your thumb drive? I found on my system anything bigger than 8GB presents a problem. Maybe to many files to read.
Ah, it is 16...Ill try getting a smaller one. Any special format, just FAT?

plenty of people using 16gig and larger drives.

I know I have trouble with a USB3 drive not working properly, while my normal drive is a 16g usb2 drive and I have no issues with that.

What format is the music in?
