I decide to do a brake job on my son's 2009 3i with 50k miles. Front pads were worn pretty evenly, but rear outer pad was twice as worn as the inner pad, and this was true on both sides. Any ideas on what could be causing this. It doesn't appear to be a serious issue as the brakes stop fine. Just have to change them every 50k miles.

Sounds like you need to lube up the slide pins in the rear brakes. Use silicone paste.

agreed x100 on that they need lube everytime they are touched no matter what. it should be a reflex.

look at the outer pads and see if the wear is close to even on them and the 2 innerd and see if they are as well, if they are even side to side then it may have another issue but if one outer is worn more than the other then its probably needing lube on the slides
