Hi All,

(Accidentally posted in the wrong forum. Sorry if you're seeing this for the second time.) :)

I searched the forums for this, but didn't find anything, so please forgive me if this has been asked before.

My wife has a 2016 Mazda 3 and I have a 2016 Mazda CX5. They use identical key fobs, so I was wondering, is it possible for us to program our fobs/cars so that one fob will open either car? As bulky as those things are, it's kind of a pain to have to carry 2 of them around. :)

Thanks for the feedback, but I'm not sure I understand your concerns. How would allowing my fob to open my wife's car and vice-versa have a negative impact on the security of either?
IF you lose the key fob both cars will be vulnerable to theft, both cars parked in the same drive way would open at the same time but will not close at the same time since you can't lock the door once inside leaving the other car still open.

You were not the brightest of your class were you?

just duck tape your keys and be gone with it, also buy a purse to carry them since you can't be bothered to carry both at the same time

Ouch

I think he meant something more along the lines of just pushing the unlock/lock buttons on the car itself (on the door handle) and the PTT once you're inside the car.
Not actually pressing the buttons on the key fob itself

I only have one Mazda so i'm not interested as much but this does sound interesting, there's probably something small inside the key that the car looks for when you're close by.

Maybe there's a way to take that out of one key and put it into the other. Then i would imagine that that one key's buttons would only unlock one car, but would "activate" unlock/lock buttons on BOTH cars when you're close. Kinda weird

If you think you're handy with this stuff it is worth a shot! But don't lose your key :p

Yes, that's exactly what I had in mind.

If you get a replacement key from Mazda, there's a process for pairing it to the car. It seems to me that it should be possible to pair a key with more than one car unless there's some logic in the key that keeps track of which car(s) it's paired with. From what I've read, I don't think this is the case. I believe all the "smarts" lie within the car, not the key, so it seems like it should be possible. I just wanted to see if anyone else had tried it or thought about it before I did it just to be careful.
