Hey,

I am thinking about selling my 2011 Mazda 3 hatchback. It has a bunch of mods that I will have to take off in order to trade it in to a dealer. I checked KBB and it says trade in value is around $6,500 and if I sell it its around $9,000. Has anyone had an experience with trading in their cars?
My car has 89,500 miles and its paid off. Looking to get a suv. Thanks!

To be honest, you really better sell the car to an individual. Company gets a lot of profit out of it. Sell it, and go see the dealer and deal the price. You better off that way.

Selling it yourself is the better deal if you have the time. I have done it both ways. I prefer to sell them myself if they have been trouble free and trade them in if they have been problems. (If the guy who bought my 78 AMC concord is out there, I am sorry, I will give you your $1,400 back.)

Another thing to consider is the tax impact. In my state, you pay tax on the net reducing the difference between trading in and selling on your own. Check the tax laws in your state.
