Hi all,

Any ideas would be appreciated. Just finished installing the new hub and cables but now the top usb port (the CarPlay one) does not recognise the phone at all. The bottom one works as expected -> phone charges, says USB 2 connected, can select in entertainment sources to play music. Plugging in to the top one does nothing. Android Auto and CarPlay options in the Apps section remains greyed out.

Visually inspecting the pins both at the back of the CMU and the back of the hub shows no pin bending etc. Also visually inspected the USB ports and they look identical. I've tried unplugging and replugging, wiggling the cables. Unfortunately I can't swap the cables to the opposite port to rule out that a cable is faulty as they have specific moulding.

Is there something I'm missing? There must be a fault with either the cables or the new hub. Not sure how I can get this fixed...

Do you own a multimeter? With that you could check (e.g. at ohm or diode setting - see youtube-video), if the cable itself is OK. De-installed cable, Multimeter to lowest ohm setting: Pin 1 on the one end to pin 1 on the other end of the cable. If the multimeter shows some value other than .1/-1 or 0 the string of the cable between these pins is OK. Repeat with the other pins.

If the cable is OK, it might also be that the USB hub is faulty. You also might try the same as for the cables with the usb hub... De-installed usb hub: Multimeter to the usb side of the hub and choose a pin in the usb port - eg. GND or +5V (as seen here). On the other side of the usb hub you probably have to check each of the pins if there is a connection (ohm showing in the multimeter).

Thats one way to check it by yourself. Alternative might be to go to the selling dealer and tell him cables and usb hub is not working properly and you want a replacement.

You first installed FW 70 and then did the hardware install, right? Because thats how it has to be done. If not, please re-install the old usb hub & cable, update to FW 70 first and afterwards install the new usb hub & cables. Then try again.

Hey thanks for the advice. I don't own a multimeter but might pick one up and try it tomorrow.

Yep I checked the FW and its definitely on 70 — and apple CarPlay and android Auto show up in the 'Applications' section of the infotainment screen so I think that side of things is all good. I wonder if it would be worth reinstalling it.... not sure if that's even possible.

Just tested both cables and they both exhibited the same behaviour: on diode setting the multimeter returned ‘002’ or ‘001’ (default display was ‘1’) on each corresponding pin of each cable as well as on the bigger outside metal bit. I’m guessing that means the cables are fine as both the working one and he not working one had the same behaviour. The hub is harder to do but I’m trying now. Again will compare the working port to the not working port to see if I can find a difference.

Here's the result of the hub testing. Sorry about the terminology as I have no idea what I'm looking at…

The bottom left and bottom right pin on both ports seems to function pretty much the same.

The top left pin functions similarly but the pin in the working port has a value double that of the pin in the non-working port.

The top right pin and the metal bit on both ports is very different however - the working port shows a high value on pins 2 & 3 but the non working port has no values at all on these pins...

Not sure what this says, are any experts able to analyse?

I doubt I'll get a reply from this old post, but I have the same problem and am wondering if you arrived at a solution.
I upgraded firmware, then installed the USB retrofit kit. Everything works except USB1 is not recognized. I double checked the cable connections and they are secure. I've tried multiple phones and different cables, but USB1 doesn't charge and doesn't recognize phones or flash drives. USB2 works just fine, but I can't run AndroidAuto/CarPlay through that port.

Any thoughts?

I’m in the same boat we might have to replace the cmu .

Why the expensive cmu? First I would replace the cheaper AA/CP hardware, which might be faulty. There are AA/CP kits/set (mainly from Aliexpress) which look like original, but are not (and do not work). Buy original kit/set e.g. of a mazda dealer and test again.

I have a similar problem, except I installed genuine mazda parts as soon as they were available, a few years ago.
everything has worked fine until a week ago, where CarPlay was hit and Miss for a few days, and now USB1 does not work at all. Rebooted the phone and the car, and tried a handful of different cables.
Any advice before I schedule something with Mazda?

Reviving, as I'm having the exact same issue. Have a 2015 Mazda 3 and I got the dealer to upgrade with Carplay back in 2020, worked fine up until a month or so ago. USB 1 does not charge or recognize iphone. Funny thing is, Android Auto works. So I'm ruling out the hardware being the issue. I've tried all the suggestions found online and nothing works. It works just fine with a Sony headunit with Carplay. Anyone find a solution as it seems to be something that is common.

If you've recently update to IOS 16 you would need to delete Mazda profile from Carplay in your phone and let it reconnect again.iPhone Settings--> General--> Carplay---> Mazda---> Forget This Car
I've seen it getting very unstable and I have found lingering DTC's in the diagnostic assist hidden menu. Access diagnostic menu and ENTER 2 will clear all DTC, reboot or turn off car, leave car and return back in a few minutes.

Accessing Diag Menu can be done in two ways go to Mazda Settings -->Display and in touchscreen press top right corner (clock) for a few secs until it beeps then go to the opposite top left corner (Home) and push for a few secs more.
Second method press and hold Music + Favorites + Mute

Did you buy the genuine Mazda upgrade hub? There are some eBay sellers marketing a knockoff hub, manufactured in China. There have been reports that those knockoff hubs are causing issues. Just another detail to check.

Thanks, the car doesn't show up on my iphone, never paired, only on my older iphone 12 was it linked. I'll try clearing the DTC as mentioned.

I bought it from the dealer and they installed. I've tried all the suggestions I could find online, nothing worked. I feel its an iphone thing because as mentioned my older android worked on it without issues. I've tried my wifes iphone 12 on IOS 16 same thing, tried an older iphone XR on older IOS and still not recognized. Just odd.
