So I did this - I have an after market stereo (Pioneer) that has a USB port, using a cable to plug in a thumb drive, but I didn't like running the cable down along the console to my seat.

I bought this cable, https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MW6HRO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, drilled a hole in my dash kit and bought one of those small thumb drives.

Of course you can mount it in other places, but I'd rather not drill a hole in any Mazda part, a dash kit I can get any time.

That's a good idea, jegonzo. I had thought about that also, but I went with two of these (double USB & aux/HDMI) instead. That way, I have all the ports taken care of for my Pioneer. I mounted them in the center console, where the factory aux port was, because I use CarPlay on a daily basis and didn't want a USB cable sticking out of my dash. It did take a bit of drilling, but I have no intentions to put the stock radio back in.

I just installed the same radio and have no idea where the wire the USB cable. Currently the USB port is coming out of the parking brake area, but that's a good idea about drilling into the radio dash kit. I was also thinking about buying this instead https://www.ebay.com/itm/222369940816

The USB in the parking brake area is for the stock stereo. You need to run a USB cable from the back of the stereo to "wherever". I originally just ran mine down the center console and had it sitting where my seat is. The one I bought, you can run to just about anywhere, you just need to drill the hole. I forgot what size it is, but I went and bought a hole drill for it.
