Ive had my car for about 8 months now and put almost 20,000 km on it already, I love everything about the car it is awesome. I owned a 2005 mazda 3 before and I really miss how the steering felt in that It felt like you where attached to the road, Is this because Mazda used hydrolic steering in their old cars and now puts electric steering in the new ones. And I do not hate the handling or steering in the new one I just really miss how the old one felt. And Is there a way too get that hydrolic steering feel back?

From Truth about Cars:

"Most cars out there have a slight caster angle of maybe 12:03 while the 2014 Mazda3 winds it up to 12:06. Why does it matter? Because we have electric power steering (EPAS). EPAS is the modern equalizer and has made all steering dull and lifeless. By dialing up the caster, you dial up the forces that come back up the steering column from the tires. This means that by the time EPAS dulls everything down there’s the hint of something left. I’d like to say it turns the Mazda3 into a Mazda Miata but I’d be lying. Instead what you get is a hint of feedback in corners and a tiny touch of road feel at other times. Because we’ve been living in a feedback-desert, the taste has overly excited some. No it isn’t your 2007 Mazdaspeed3, but it is livelier than the Focus or Civic."

Mazda successfully made the electric steering feel good compared to other brands out there but it won't feel like a hydraulic. Perhaps increasing the caster angle to 12:09?

Yeah, get used to the video game like steering feel.
It wont be like the previous gens but still fun to drive non the less...although I do agree steering feel is so vital to how good a car can feel when taking turns.
more grip at the front - wider tires? To make it harder to turn the wheel.

I agree about the steering. Even the 2012 model has better steering feel.
how about blaming the steering feel on awful SP5000 Dunlops tires , i bet nice set of performance summer tires would improve the steering feel .... my CX9 still has hydraulic set up and with Lubegard additive it feels so effortless and precise...
The Gen 3 test car I drove had Yoko Avids, same as many Gen 2 Skys, and the steering feel is still muted. So, tires are mostly out of the question, and you can pin the blame on the EPAS. Going really wide with the wheels and tires will give you more feedback by virtue of increasing the moment arm that the tires can use to impart forces to the tierods and steering rack.

So how about them ZG flares and 18x11's... :detective:
I personally like the steering feel with 225 wide summer tires. I haven't driven a gen2 so can't compare to that.

OMG YES. I miss the handling of my 2006 mazda 3. Good times. I wanna sell my 2014 mazda 3 and get a black/red 2007 mazda 3s sedan. Those look awesome and have the old steering goodness. mMmmm
Having driven a lot of cars recently, the Mazda's EPAS is still more tactile than the hydraulic systems in most other cars. Specifically, the current gen Camaro, Mustang, etc. Drove the Forte Koup (hell of a car for not much $$$), own a '11 Lancer GTS but the Mazda provides more feedback and confidence. So while we might have lost a little feel on the EPA's altar, rest assured, it's one of the best feeling modern electric assist systems out there.
