I don't think you run into problems till you get to 9.5 with wide tires. I could turn full lock with 18x9.5 +37 and 245/35/18. With 255's now I can still turn full lock, but it does rub the inside metal a little bit.

Interpreting your question another way, however... no, it's not possible to fit in "compact" spots anymore.

so the overall feeling is better with wider wheels? given that weight is close to stock or lighter if possible with my budget.

edit: does it feel more "planted"? stock setup feels like the car is tip toeing.

I think it feels more planted and more controlled...I went from the stock 16X6.5 to 17x7.5...granted some of the improvement is the tires since I went from the awful stock Bridgestone EL400s on the 16 to Conti DWS on the 17...love these tires...especially here in Vancouver.

More controlled/planted for sure and expect to see an improvement when I ditch the stock EL400s for a wider, summer specific tire. Right now the stock 205/55s are mounted on 2004 RX-8 wheels (16x7.5) and going to replace them with 225/50s.
