I know that it was put there to ease the thirsty 2.5, but cruising at 80 in sixth is over 3k RPM. When I cruse, I like to be around mid two's.

then cruise slower. little 4 cylinders can't cruise a 4,000lb car @ 75mph at 2k dude the power just isn't there, you'd eat gas like crazy

I don't want a 100 MPH cruising speed, as fun as that would be, that's not what I want. I just want to be able to do highway speed without cranking it at 2,700.

unfortunately.. that's impossible. if you keep the throttle low, you could easily get 25-27mph @ highway speed.

Wrong. The car weighs just a tad over 3,000lbs, the 2.5 is about as large as 4 cylinder motors come, and the Skyactiv models do have a lower ratio in 6th than the 2.5, which is part of the reason why that car gets such better mileage. Mazda calculated the 2.5's ratios in order to keep the motor on the boil, so to speak, and it's the reason why passing at 70mph in 6th is pretty easy. 4.11 final drive plus super short transmission ratios are some of the primary reasons why the car is as fun to drive as it is.

Jeez, OV. What gave you the impression the car was in camaro weight territory? Skyactiv's are actually even less.. like in the 28-2900lbs range.
