Hi guys,

I have a 2010 Mazdaspeed3. Is it normal that above the tailpipes on both sides quickly get sooty deposits. I have had the car from new and I believe it has always done this. The soot is dry (not oily) and washes off pretty easily. I live in California so this isn't the product of long times of being cold or idling. Most of my trips are longer as well.

Perfectly normal. Turbocharged engines are setup to run rich from the factory.

I don't mind the soot on the exhaust tips and figured that was normal. I get large sooty rings around the exhaust up my rear bumper and if I clean my rear window the dirt that comes off is black and sooty. Is that much normal? I can snap a photo in a few days when I am back in town, but the diameter of dark sooting around each exhaust tip is roughly 3 inches and then it disperses to lighter.

There has been no real change in the amount from when it was stock to having a few mods.

very much so, a some of the aftermarket cat-back systems push the tips out a little farther to cut down on this
