Perhaps make a "M3R choice award" and have it 3 times a year with 3 winning positions. One for Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3. At the end of that year, have a "Top winners of 20XX" award for each generation which would be chosen from the past event's top 3 winners. All winners would be chosen from polls as usual.
Prizes could be free decals, upgrade parts defined by the categories, vouchers from local suppliers or service for cars. Perhaps getting sponsors that you already have involved in this contest. Have the winners have a spot in a editor's magazine, online or paper on Mazda products or modded Street cars. This would also create a buzz for M3F by bringing a few new members to the forum and we would get to see more cars from owners that would normally visit other sites. M3F would be mentioned by editors for the user's cars being reviewed.
