I have owned a 2018 Mazda 3 BN (Canada) for a few weeks now. Since I live in Europe I need to replace the headlights. I am an electronic engineer so I can handle the electrical installation without any problem. I have regular halogen lights even without manual leveling.

I want Full LED lights and here we have 3 types:
  • with AFS (swivel)
  • with ALH (ADB - Smart Adaptive Headlights)
  • without ALH and without AFS (simple only auto leveling)
I would like to have adaptive headlights with ALH and for that I need a ALH control module or maybe AFS.

I did a little investigation on the lamps, because about the control units has already been written more than once.
So we have the following lamps, I am writing about the EU versions for the M3 BN:
  • BAAR (T), BABD, BABH - LED lamps with AFS
  • BABE (DM), BAAS - LED lamps with ADB
  • BSP5 (8L), BABG - LED lamps without ADB and without AFS
The most common and easily purchasable is the 8L lamp in Europe, for it the ALH B63C-51-225 module (without AFS and without ADB).

However, I would like the ADB version with the control module B63E-51-027B. Unfortunately, this module cannot be get anywhere. Maybe at an authorized service center, but that would be to expensive.

AFS

I accidentally bought one (7-pin BAAR T version) lamp for experiments, that is with AFS.

I peeled off the lamp shade and there are two electronics and there are two motors: a swivel actuator and a leveling actuator. The electronics appear to be the same as in the 8L lamp (without AFS and without ADB), there is one difference, as there are additionally 3 wires to the swivel actuator.

LED Electronics inside the AFS lamp:

So I need the B63D-51-02X module with AFS. You can sometimes get one for about $150 but even much more.

I looked at the diagrams from the AFS M3 (BN) and MX-5 (2016):

AFS Control Module euroesi.mazda.co,jp diagram

M3 they are similar to AFS MX-5 (2016), practically the same:
MX-5 AFS Module diagram

I wonder if it is possible to use this module from MX-5 (AFS KB8B5102X 2017-2018) in our M3 BN, (usually the equivalents have the 5102X end)? In my opinion, yes, at least from the electronic side. I just don't know what are the signal levels to the lamp actuators, maybe there are some differences here. ALS sensor should work similarly, or maybe exactly the same.

Why MX-5, because these second-hand modules are available and not expensive (like $30-$50). I would like to try to match our M3s.
I wonder if it is not also possible to use modules from CX-3, 6 etc.? What do you think?

ADB

I am still considering if it would be possible to retrofit the version with ADB (without AFS) using other models?
What about the B63E-51-027B module, can it be replaced from other models like CX-5?
I am not sure, but it would be more difficult to replace the 51027B module with others from the CX-5 or CX-3, because the design of the lamps and the number of LED diodes may be different. Or maybe not?

I haven't study of Mazda particular ABD, it in general, ADB adoption require full set of forward vehicle detection sensors and calibrations. Mazda ABD is rather low resolution simple style, sensor programing and calibration can be very tricky depend on type of sensors.
Did vehicle have all sensor ready?

Optically, as long as headlamp front lens refraction pattern is similar, most of focus should be lamp mount height difference beam composition balance adjustment.

I am interested in how you can adopt ! Keep us updated here

The M3 BN requires only a camera and FSC module and a suitable lamp with additional LEDs and an auto-leveling module for the lights the B63E-51-027B controller - LED (W/Adaptive Driving Beam) .

You can compare the front lamps:

ADB lamp (EU not USA, Canada), additional LED:

Non ADB lamp but AFS lamp looks the same only with a swivel actuator inside:
