Anyone know how to remove the chrome U-shaped trim around the grille? I've seen pictures of the bumper apart and there's a tons of clips it looks like. Just wanted to see if anyone has done it on the 2017+ so I could get an idea on what to separate and what not to so I don't end up breaking something on the bumper. I'm trying to paint the trim itself black. Thanks!

the service manual is pretty good. From what i have read you drill out the rivets holding that grill assembly on.
then remove the front bumper. Then the rest of the removal for the grill is super simple.

Removing the Rivets first is a good idea because everything is in a more stable place while attached to the car.

I am waiting until the spring to do my grill, horns and maybe something else.

Look at the back of the bumper, iirc there are a few phillips head screws to undo, then you have to 'unclip' the chrome insert from the bumper... It's pretty simple. However, be careful w/ the middle part at the bottom of the "U" because that's held on by a clip as well and will flex/crack if you bend it too much.

I wrapped mine w/ metallic black 3M Vinyl

So you don't actually have to remove the bumper to take off the U on a 2017?

Did mine the lazy hobo way...wrap w/o grille or bumper removal. More than 3yrs now, it has held up well vs. the elements & daily grind.

Looks good!
Did the same on my 2012 MZ3 and it held up fine and I recently did my badges front and back on my 2014 and it was easy... I may do the chrome ring too. Plastidip looks great and holds up beautifully and... you can always remove it if you don't like it.

You do need to remove the front fascia to remove the U shaped trim piece. Many have gotten around that by either wrapping or painting it in place.

Here’s mine painted (after fascia removal/reinstall).

You do have to remove the bumper to undo the screws behind the trim pieces... unless you have really small and long hands and arms...

Edit: Apparently I missed RoadTrip's post. >:p

Edit 2: If you want to get rid of the chrome "wing" that flows w/ the grille into the headlight, you'll need to bake that open... Same with the turn signal's outer edge.

Wrapping that bastard trim is horrible. I've tried 3 times and I keep accidentally cutting off too much and the chrome becomes visible.
The shop I took it to had some trouble with the curved section near the headlights. It started peeling in that corner after a few days so they patched it with a small strip of vinyl. so far it's holding up and blends nicely.

the 2016 chrome trim looks easier to wrap
