Does increasing the gap kill coils?

CEL light, code P0304 (ignition misfire #4 cyl) a month after replacing spark plugs. I pulled the new plugs and verified the local mechanic left the gap at .044 on the correct NGK's, same as at the Mazda dealer. Autozone specs at .044 now, the service guy at the Mazda gave me the glasey eyed stare, he didn't know when I showed the .030-.032 spec in the owners manual.
By the time I got to the car the CEL was out, so I regapped the plugs to .031 swapped the coil from #4 to #3 and cleared the codes. Told her to drive it and let me know what happens.

Autozone wants $14 each, dealer was asking $35 each for the NGK's. AZ also has a 9/16 plug socket that works fine with a 6" extension. Note the NGK plug # ends with the gap so it changed from 8 to 11, thats .8 mm vs 1.1 mm gap.The Mazda plug had both a mazda part # and the NGK #
