Just wanted to check if people here have non OEM roof racks and how they like them. I don't particularly like the look of the OEM ones (~$300), even though they do seem to be much cheaper than non OEM options (~$500). I think roof racks with the crossbar going past the towers just look much better.

The one I'm considering is the Yakima skyline with the aero bars, which also has a higher load capacity of 165 lbs.. OEM is 100 lb I believe

Yakima rack

I just installed the Yakima Skyline bars on my 2017 hatchback.
I bought the Mazda gutter trim with the access holes: part#s BHY2-50-9L0 and BHY2-50-9H0

I have the 50" bars. They are great. They offer more real estate than the OEM bars... especially if you use any accessories that use the t-track system. I have a kayak rack (Rhino Rack Nautica, not pictured) that fits in the t-slots... which allow the kayak carrier to go to the very edge of the bars.

I am also working on brackets for the fairing that will use the t-slot on the under-side of the bar (so I don't have the straps around the bar... which take up space and are not aerodynamic).

*** I tried to post a photo of my roof rack, but I have not yet proven my worth in the forum... imagine a gray metallic Mazda3 hatch with black cross-bars and a wind fairing *** :laugh2:

If you upload it to Imgur or another similar photoshare website and PM me the link I'll upload it for you so he can get an idea on what it looks like. Plus I'm a little curious about a roof rack myself. I have one of my Mk4 Jetta GLI and I loved it.

I've been thinking Yakima as well since I already have a bunch of Yak stuff for the Honda Pilot. Has anyone tried doing the less aero round bars? How bad is the noise? All my accessories are round so it would be cool to reuse it, but not at the cost of massive noise.

Also, I watched an install video on these landing pads, the guy just drilled a hole (after figuring out where it would line up) in the existing trim strip instead of using the factory cut ones. Seemed to work just fine. Was a professional rack place.
