my friend has a 2010 cobalt ss an his does it like it has a feature for it but he says you can do it if you know how??

well last night was cruising round town i tried no lift-shifting and to my suprise actually worked but dont know if its bad for you car or not????

i was told if you mess up its like grinding gears ??

I'm not sure how useful this would be in daily driving situations, but I don't necessarily think it's bad for your car...unless you miss a shift, that is.

If anything it's just fun/interesting to see what our cars area capable of.

Yeah...I've heard of the technique but haven't ever really tried it. I've been driving so long and become so used to timing the clutch and throttle that it's just habit to do it that way.

I don't even really think about what I'm doing anymore...kind of like heel/toe downshifting, I started doing that after learning that it would give smoother shifts and now I am barely even cognizant that I do it anymore...it's just kind of become habit.

The newer cobalt ss does have a feature that lets you no lift shift. Doing it on a car that does not have this feature is not very good on the drive-train especially if you over rev it and bounce off the rev limiter.

The Cobalt SS has a feature for no lift shifting where the computer cuts spark so there's no power coming from the engine when you push the clutch in...makes the revs drop so its easier to upshift w/o grinding. Our cars don't have such a program to do that, but you can still do it if you rev-match correctly.

I've only clutchless upshifted on an FSAE car, which is easy since its a motorcycle engine/tranny. I'm not about to do it in my 3 (I don't street race...its a 2.0...) and I'd be hesitant to try it on my motorcycle. I would be curious to try it if I bought a dedicated weekend racer tho...cause thats the only situation where I could see myself needing to do that

AAAHH but there is a way to no lift shift on almost any car....its called the W.O.T box which stands for Wide Open Throttle shift its a small box that will program your vehicle to work as the cobalt does. i think its a hot feature that will shave some several seconds off your 1/4 mile. I contacted the company two days go about it working on a 2010 MS3 and they have yet to respond :( they also have a box that includes the stage 2 launch control which is basically a rev limiter for 1st gear that is adjustable to any rpm. If you dial it in correctly you could get some lightning quick launches from it.

yeah its a very tricky technique to learn but don't you feel weird not letting off the gas on your new car?. the fear of missing the gear holds me from even trying but i will definitely keep you posted on the WOT box. i think its a great mod and inexpensive. less than $170 with no lift and 2 step.

That's an old racing technique, but beware. You can trash synchros in short order if you're not careful. What happens is that without the power reduction the synchronizers get over-pressured and can crack. When they do that, you'll grind every time you shift into the gear with the broken synchronizer, and that in turn damages gears. I had to replace 3rd gear in my Mustangs that I raced about once per season because that's how I shifted them at the drags.

yeah the new cobalts it comes as a feature a little different than you would do it in most cars, and yeah you can do it in any car...really only matters for boosted cars, so u dont lose and boost, and its not bad for that car...that is untill u miss a gear and rev the shit out of your motor and blow it...so just shift well and your good
