Hello all. I guess this is the right forum to join, because I've been reading up a bit on the Skyactiv 2.5 engine that shows up in pretty much every Mazda right now. My family is in the market for a new car, and the wife wants it to be a crossover-sized vehicle. Of course that led us to compare the CR-V, RAV4, and CX-5. After much deliberation and reading, I'm convinced the CX-5 is a good fit. I didn't find any specific CX-5 focused forums, so here I am.

I just wanted to learn more about modern Mazdas (I've never owned one myself, coming from used 80's Hondas and 90's Toyotas that lasted over 200k miles) and hopefully join a community of like-minded folks. I'm especially interested in learning how to make sure the engine and transmission serve me for as long as I've come to expect from the legendary Japanese reliability!

If you want to get a good long life from the drive train, just drive it and do the regular maintenance stuff like oil changes etc. Keep up on the maintenance and the car should easily make 200k miles.

Just my opinion, but I have 2 "new" mazda's. I have a 2013 CX-5 and then last year also bought a Mazda 3. My CX-5 has almost 80k on it now, my M3 only has 20. Both are solid cars, and you just can't beat what you get for the money. the only car that I feel that can get you more bang for the buck is a loaded Hyundai.

HOWEVER, if you drive the Hyundai, and then drive the Mazda, you'll see why I picked Mazda :) That skyActiv is great and when you put it in "sports mode" it is another world. My CX-5 was the first year they came out so it is much lower tech and only has the 2.0 engine in it. Now they CX-5's come with the 2.5. make sure you get that larger engine.

The largest complaint you will find about Mazda's is their paint sucks. Right now, my M3 (with 20k) looks like it should be the one with 80K on it and the 2013 CX-5 looks like it only has 20K on it. So either 1 of 2 things happened...

1) Mazda wasn't using their new environmentally friendly "paint" method back in 2013
2) My CX5 is white which happens to be one of the Mazda's "Premium Paints". It's a 3 layer process and cost like $300 more. The M3 is not a premium color.

My point being is that I don't think you will find another SUV-ish vehicle out there that can give you the value, tech, and MPG that the CX-5 can. I would just highly recommend that you consider one of the premium paint colors and actually get something that may not chip when you look at it.

I too have two newer Mazdas, a 2015 M3 and a 2016.5 CX5. My wife loves how the CX5 drives and its gets everything done. Oil changes are super easy as well.
I would absolutely and have previously suggested to my friends to get a CX5. I might ditch my M3 once the diesel version come out.
