Long time Ford/Mazda/Fazda owner… currently shopping for a new daily driver, and have decided to look for a 10-13 Mazda 3 S Hatchback. It’ll be replacing my “unicorn” Subaru, which I enjoyed while it lasted, but costwise I can’t justify building a new engine for it (spun a rod bearing @ 212k miles). The Subaru is a 2005 Legacy GT Limited Wagon w/ manual transmission, 1 year only! I’m hoping to find someone interested in buying & building it, since it’s so rare, but worst case I will part it out.

Anyway, on to Mazda stuff.

I have a 1995 Ford Escort GT, which some of you may know is a 90-94 Mazda Protégé LX with a different skin. These came stock with a Mazda BP, essentially the same motor as the early Protégé and the 94-97 Miata. I replaced the stock motor 10+ years ago with one from a Mazda 323 GTR, a factory turbocharged variant of the BP. At one time I drag raced the car and ran high-11’s, but I’m currently reconfiguring it for autocross & track days. A few years ago, the 100% mechanically bone stock (from throttle body to turbo) motor dynoed at 320 whp/325 ft lbs of torque on pump gas. It’s a pretty fun little ride!

I also have a stock 1999 Miata for summer days.

In the past I have owned a couple more “Fazdas” - various Escort GT’s and one Mercury Tracer LTS. At one time I also had a 1990 Mazda Protégé 4WD… another unicorn of a car, perhaps even more rare than my current Subaru!

Anyway, I am happy to be here & have been reading through the forums looking for tips on what to look for, easy upgrades, etc. Will be checking out a 2010 MZ3 S tomorrow, hopefully it turns out to be everything I’m looking for in a daily driver! I've been floating around on forums for ages (mostly clubprotege.com where I am moderator) but it's been a while since I researched a new platform!

I really want to get a 2.5, and from what I read I don't think that was available in a 3gen manual hatchback until '15, driving the price up further. Doing my best to avoid having a car payment!

Plus, part of me would rather have standard port injection rather than direct injection. Call me picky, I know :)

therieldeal, very smart of you to try to avoid a car payment. Two things for your considerations if you have not already:

1) Drive both options and see what feels right for you;
2) Research this forum for the amount of people who bought the 2.0L and afterwards wished they been able to get the 2.5 , that they are sorry they did not get the 2.5 for its great power (either because in their country, Mazda does offer the 2.5 or similar issues). Then many have spend lots of money trying to get the 2.0 up to the power level they are wanting.

Best of luck for you getting what you wish — within your budget.

Well it took a few weeks, but I managed to find a decent 2010 S GT yesterday! 130K miles, needs a little bit of work, but nothing I can't handle. Time to start digging around in the other forums for the info i seek!
