Getting a P0171 lean code on my 2.5L (with 140K miles) and getting horrible fuel economy. I understand it can be a somewhat common issue on these with the intake mfld gaskets leaking. Is this true of this generation Mazda 3 or was that mostly only a problem on previous iterations? Along those lines -- I am wondering what other areas/components on this engine like to cause vacuum leaks and also wondering if the fuel pumps on these are also known to cause a lean condition.

Thanks.

I would get like 6 at a time. Anyway I was checking for a vacuum leak in a crew bus (Dodge van) I use water in a spray bottle. Spray the area you can see the water get sucked in at the leak the engine idle will also stumble when the leak is found . The students asked me why I didn't use carb cleaner .
