This is why when I do upgrade my 2012 Mazda 3 Sedan I want to get a 2015 or ‘16 3 HB for the manual brake.

Didn't think about that, so something to look forward to when it comes time to change brakes, but that electric brake sure makes for a much nicer console on an automatic.

Yeah this is why I've been worried about changing the rear brakes on my 3. I figured there was some sort of catch to all this electronic parking brake nonsense that would hinder me from easily changing them like I would on a conventional brake setup. Definitely don't feel like going to the dealer just for a brake job.

ugh.

I miss my handbrake turns! :)

However, without the EPB, I assume we'd lose hill hold, which is a surprisingly nice feature with a manual transmission.

My 3 has hill hold, and it's a 2015 with manual transmission and manual parking brake. The implementation seems to be unrelated to the parking brake.

That would be a nice feature, although somewhat unnecessary, if it actually was a feature on our cars.

Hill assist is not equipped on my car. It rolls back when gravity tells it to... or I'm being lazy and don't engage the clutch fast enough.

HLA should still work if you have it. Its done with pitch sensors that tell the ECU when the car is on a hill. The ECU then uses the brakes to prevent the wheels from rolling, sort of like ABS in reverse. It only stays on for about 2 seconds before disengaging though with the clutch pedal depressed, or it disengages when enough power to move the car reaches the wheels. The manual handbrake is related to the HLA function at least marginally. If you pull the brake handle up just enough for the light to come on the HLA function doesn't work.

This one is a bit different than the link you posted... first one " then press the start button 3 times quickly" vs "Switch the ignition ON"

Did you try them to see if it lights up as indicated?
True...

Haven't tried either procedure yet, only 7K on my "3" so far...
