Hi all!

For my first free oil change the dealer used castrol syntec and I was very uphappy with cold/and low end performance. During idle my engine also seem to skip a few beats now. My city MPG droped by a few also.

I decided to add moly since its suppose to help with those exact concerns and castrol... well theyre not big fan of it.

I added half of the 300ml bottle as per instruction. (30 ml / qt) and wow there is a difference...my fuel economy has increased over all and my engine sounds great when reving during cold.

I would highly recommend this as additive to non Mazda oil. Great combo with castrol edge (BLK bottle).

Napa/Amazon have this for 7-8 bucks and you get two oil intervals with it. good deal if you ask me. Cant wait for UOA .:laugh2:

When I did my 1st oil change at the dealership and they were a 1/2 a quart low I decided to do my own fluid maintenance. Since 2011 I've been using lubro moly MOS2 with Castrol Edge European 0W-40. Been a believer in its use with direct inject engines.

I don't know Castrol Syntec, but not all synthetic oils are created equal. Many are just a blend of regular oil with some synthetic components. If I had to make a total guess, I would say that no matter what they told you they put in, they probably went from the synthetic oil that should have been in it from the factory to a "regular" oil (of unknown viscosity) - either on purpose or by mistake. If you decide to run synthetic oil, make sure that you get one that is fully synthetic and not a blend (i.e., Amsoil, Mobil 1, or something like that). Using additives should be unnecessary and will get expensive if you change your oil regularly.

Just stick w/ euro blend Castrol Edge, Mobil1, Shell fully synthetic 0w-20(temperate)/5w-30(tropics). No funny noises. No additives required.

I refuse to use any additives, cleaners, etc. The reason is simple: by adding something to your oil, do you know how it will react with the additives that are already in it? Do you know the long term effects it may have on your engine? Last I checked, the spec in your owners manual doesn't call for additives. I wouldn't want to gamble with the warranty on that. In fact, I believe it says not to use additives.

Maybe I'm over cautious, but at least I know there will be no question about the fluid chemistry down the road.

ICEMAN, Yes that is the product I've been using for the past 4 1/2 yrs. Liqui moly MOS2. I also use their valve cleaner prior to changing my oil.

The lube oil specialist at a major OEM that I worked for considered all oil additives "snake oil" and advised against all oil additives. Most will do no harm, but all of them are unnecessary and will tend to upset the careful balance of properties that re built into modern lube oil. Moly is a friction modifier that might have a measureable influence on older engines with flat tappets, but the SkyActive engines use roller tappets and are less sensitive tothe friction modifiers in oil.

I just wanted to say I do my own maintenance and have gotten Hondas to 200k with no failure in anything. Didnt even have to do timing belt.

Not ussualy fan of additive either but moly is a winner in this engine, I noticed the syntec difference immediately I checked the invoice and saw syntec was added and wanted to counter act the low RMP side effect it had on my engine.

Mazda seems to be in agreement with you that is why Mazda 0w20 is so astronomically high in Moly (see oil analysis below):

There are several posts on Liqui Moly on Bob is the Oil guy. There are many variations of Moly, detergents and add packs in oil to best suit it for the application. Bottom line is the best results overall will be with Mazda high moly oil. This oil is a bit pricey but some post they run 10k miles between changes no problem (based on used oil analysis). Many oil geeks buy this oil for its robust add pack and use it on their vehicles whether they are Mazda or not. I noticed the difference when my local dealer substituted Castrol and since then have changed it myself.

Based on the claims made in this post I've decided to give this a try. My average mileage recently has been around 31.7 lets see what it changes to. I threw in a can of 2009 stuff right after my oil change.
