Hi,
I just scheduled a 7,500 mile maintenance for my 3. In doing so the service rep mentioned they add Krex graphite oil additive to every Mazda car they sell or service. I never heard of it before that. If they're using it, I would guess it must be legit. Does anyone have any knowledge or better yet, experience with this stuff?

You know, adding saw dust to the oil will reduce oil consumption... For a while, then the engine dies and no more oil consumption worries!

Never heard tell of it, so why pay for it?
There's no explicit extra charge for it. I can tell them not to put it in, but the service costs the same.

Krex has a 10 year/200k mile warranty
Ahh, I see. Well, it's already in there since they serviced the car right before I bought it. If I don't get or find any negative responses that are cause for concern, I'll probably just let them continue to put it in. Thanks for the info.

I decided to forego the Krex. I don't how they can say it is not an additive when it is added to the oil. Anyway I figure oil technology, metallurgy and engine design is so advanced these days, a product like Krex should not be needed. It's all about selling oil service for the dealership, and the 200K warranty.

Krex makes an issue about oil beginning to breakdown at 350*, and it will. But if the oil temp in the engine got to 350* the oil would be toasted and smell burnt, and the engine would already be suffering from some other issue causing the oil temp to run that high to begin with. It certainly reads like scare tactics marketing for a snake oil product.
