So my car was due for a new air filter, and I thought I'd give a kn a try. Long story short, my commute to work is about 30km of 100kmh highway driving and about 3 or 4 kind of stop and go. And I found im lucky to get 6.5 or closer to 7l/100km on a warmer day, where as I swear i could get closer to 6 or maybe below driving harder than i am now. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

no, and I switched almost a year ago to the k&n drop in filter...any mileage gains, negligible...but I would not say it made it worse...

How long have you been tracking this change? My guess is not very long. You need many drives to say that there is a problem. Could be natural variation.

Changing the filter will not cause your power or fuel economy to go up or down. Unless the old filter was really blocked up.

You can always disconnect the battery for 20 minutes to clear the computer, but I'm guessing it won't do much. Still, couldn't hurt.

Sorry I am ole school, but does anyone think that an OEM which is desperate for more HP/TQ and more fuel mileage, would leave something on the table deliberately at this time.

This same discussion is going on in Stingray Corvette Forum and someone else just removed his K&N, then went back to factory for resumption of his better OEM mileage with his OEM air cleaner.

Sure ten years ago, OEM’s left lots on the tablet and K&N’s were a positive thing (still have it in my 1992 454 farm truck), but low hanging fruit has long been picked up by the manufacturers. And someone else on that forum did similarly, returning to factory, for even his intake system.

For someone who wants the intake sound of a CAI system, that is a different story.

I dropped an AEM dry flow filter in a couple years ago. No mileage change, but that wasn't my goal. I knew that going in. I just won't have to buy another filter, like, ever.

Over-oiled K&N or foam panels can cause problems for hot-wire mass airflow sensors. But the bottom line is that an aftermarket panel typically fails to outperform a generic OEM paper cartridge, for either flow or ability to keep dirt out of the engine, under normal street conditions. As noted above, no manufacturer today would sacrifice even one mpg to save a couple of bucks on an air filter.

K&N was designed for one thing: to keep flowing some air even when crusted with dirt in off-road races, while keeping most of the large dirt particles out of the cylinders. They are not great filters, but they were better than anything else IN OFF-ROAD RACING for a few years. Past that, their other claims are just snake oil.
