to me that looks like a relatively simple (almost too simple) design for the hot air to be kept away from the intake. like when you used to sit at a restaurant where smoking and non-smoking sections were 'divided' by a 5 foot wall.

and this cost is $321!

I think your right... and BTW... if you think of install a BOV, you'll have to modify the intake because it's bolted on the stock one...
