I took my "princes" to Canada last week and after crossing the border immediately found out one of the most popular cars Hyundai Veloster non turbo, and 2014-2016 Mazda 3 (didn't see the 6 at all) mostly non sGT. In the states people at the traffic light or parking lot compliment on a color or shape sometimes, but in Canada this car is so common that nobody is looking at it. Is Mazda 3 really popular or it was just me?

Compacts have always sold in larger numbers than mid-size in Canada. Just to give you an idea, Canadians bought 17k Mazda3 vs 1.5k Mazda6 since January of this year. Canada has 1/9 of the US population so that would translate to 150k Mazda3 for the US on a similar per capita basis. Mazda US sold 47k Mazda3 this year, so Canada is trending at 3x the US on a per capita basis for the Mazda3.

The new Civic still leads in Canada at 43k so far this year. That would translate in the US to ~700k for the whole year. Last year the Civic sold 360k in the US so it is trending at 2x the US on a per capita basis.

Yup lots of 3s here. Since many of us drive long distances on highways, fuel economy is king. We also pay more for our gas than our US cousins.

Generally we either want small reliable cars with good handling (for the winter) or many just buy trucks.

According to these stats, the 2017 YTD numbers put the Mazda3 at #13 , but that's not split by vehicle class. Eyeballing for comparable vehicles, you've got Civic at #3 , Corolla at #5 , Elantra at #9 , Cruze at #16 , and Mazda3 at #13 , making the Mazda3 the 5th most popular car this year (that's not even worrying about car sizes).

I'd expect the Civic and Corolla popularity are partially due to the assembly plants being in Canada. That's why I test drove a civic before the Mazda3, anyway.

EDIT: The cruze figures include a 36% gain over 2016. Crazy. Also, I linked the June 2017 stats. There are newer stats, but that's just what my browser pulled up.

Montreal was filled up with a base model. Didn't see anyone gallivanting around on 18" rims. That being sad the roads are worse I have ever seen in NYC probably prior a former pres. era.

Base model is GX. My experience is that the GS model is most common, at least in southwestern Ontario. Only the GT came with 18" wheels (and the 2.5l engine). Although I believe the wheels were an option for the lower trim levels.

Canada, especially Quebec love Mazda's and VW's , and have a higher than average take up rate on manual transmissions.

I'm In Vancouver on the west coast and these things are all over out here. I just traded my 2016 Honda coupe for an 18 GT and I'm loving it.
