I'm trying to remove the black front cover from the CD player (model # BHP3-669G0, 2016 Mazda 3 GT-M).

However, I'm stuck on getting it off because of a white ribbon cable that's running from a small PCB on the back of the cover to inside the device chassis (see photos).

Anyone have a clue as to how to remove the cover without having to open up the entire device to disconnect the ribbon cable?

TLDR: I want to replace the CD player with some USB outlets. I want to keep the cover to maintain midconsole looks, or even to lead the USB outlets through. Alternatively, I can keep the device itself in place (disconnected, because I want to use its connector to provide the voltage needed), but ideally, I'd only place the cover back (with some foam tape or something to keep it in place).

Please share when it arrives, I'll definitely pull the CD player out of there if there is something worthwhile replacing the space with. Never even checked if mine is working. :)
I went and bought something similar: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Dua...gital-Voltmeter-12V-Electric/32789268055.html

However, it's not a quick fit/fix, because the front cover has the same dimensions as the hole that's left by the CD player, so there's nothing to keep it in place (it just falls into the hole), so I'm going to have to figure out some sort of additional support for it.

FWIW, the front plate isn't rigid, it's some sort of rubbery material. Quite stiff, but still flexible.

I will draw up a fascia the same outside dimension as the CD player and an internal hole to suit the USB and laser cut it from 1.5mm alloy and powdercoat it black.

How you get the cd player out? you need special tools ??
I got a cheap car panel removal kit that contains two tools for removing the CD player. They are the P/d-shaped ones at the bottom of this photo:

You insert them in two small slots below the CD slot, they push back retainer clips on the CD player chassis that allows you to slide it out.

Nice! Please share if you've drawn something up, there's a makers lab in town with a laser cutter :smile2:

Glad I found this thread, Im planning on removing mine as well but had no interest in replacing it with anything. My goal was to make it look like the lower model with just that nice oem tray which holds my phone. Does anyone know if there is a different piece of trim I would need for that process? Im guessing there would be a small cover piece to put over where the CD player used to be. Like the picture below.

The sides with the notches need to point towards the center of the CD player. It's a bit fiddly, but how it works is that the CD player chassis has two metal retainers that are springloaded, pushing them outwards so they prevent the chassis from sliding out the slot.

The tools are used to push those retainers back into the chassis (against the spring), so they allow the chassis to slide out.

I've included the relevant part of the service manual.

I didn't clip mine back in,after a car stereo specialist unplugged it for me,I just have it snugged in with sound insulation foam.I had to replace my HVAC module,so it had to be unclipped. For those who think the CD player is worthless;try a Darkside of the moon remaster to get the full effect of the Bose surround system. Impressive !

Status Update

Status update on where I am now: my father in law is putting his laser cutter to good use and is designing and making a wooden panel which can hold a USB port.

The photo is just a mockup in plywood, instead of the voltage gauge it's going to have dual USB ports. The etched lines below the gauge are used to be able to flex the wood (it can take a 90 degree curve), because the original front also curves back toward the bottom.

Once we got all the dimensions worked out, he's going to try to source some black MDF. If he can't find that we're going for plain MDF and paint it ourselves, or perhaps PMMA ("Plexiglass"), but that doesn't bend very well (although we haven't yet tried with a bit of heat, but you have to be really careful with that).

EDIT: added a photograph of the third iteration, now in place and painted black. Still doesn't fit entirely right, but it's getting there. I ordered some black matte vinyl for the final version.

I also like the idea of removing it and having that area for my phone/storage like in the base models.
