Got everything wired up with Honuuu's instructions. There are actually 2 green wires on that wiring harness shown in the picture. You want to tap your black wire into the one inline with the violet wire. So in his picture, the bottom left green wire and bottom right violet wire.

Here's a quick vid of the fading lights...

What's the flashing blue light (on bottom left dash display) that saw when you opened your from driver side door?

I wired up a fake blinking LED to represent an alarm system. It blinks when the key is out of the ignition and turns off when the key is in.

Wow this is exactly what i want to do! Wire them with the dome lights without having to go to the roof. Can't wait to pick up my footwell lighting kit now. Getting colder here though and might be too much for a winter install! =)

How do I adapt the OEM Footwell LED lighting kit to function like the vid above?

Do I just tap the red/blue wire to violet?
Then the black wire which is supposed to go the ground lug on the body to the green wire?

Confirmed this, connect red and blue to violet and black to green.

I connected the black ground to the ground lug at first as the manual for the lighting kit said but it was on all the time even with the car turned off. So I had to connect it to the green wire on the same harness and everything worked as described. On with the doors open and slowly dims to off.

Hey guys, I'm planning on installing my own LED footwell lighting using the peel-and-stick strips. However, I also have installed a Homelink rearview mirror, with a t-tap connector to the same violet wire that the footwell lights tap in to.

My question is: would it be ok to tap the violet wire again for the LED lights? Or is there another wire that can control the LED strips so they have the same action as the dome lights?

Thanks for the help!

Hi guys, i just wanna say; you dont need to open all those parts and take wire from dome light, i will show you the real connection wires from down side (in the service they make the door sills/foot wel lightning connection from here and the lights go out slowly when you close the door regardles of the dome lights switch)

Here is the description of how i made the connections of door sills; you can use same wires for foot wel lightning; (in Turkish :) )

You will use the green and violet wires. Green to the black, violet to the red. Thats all ;)

Also; if anyone wants, i can send the bulletine of connecting the footwel lights which used in services... (welcome illumination, installlation introduction)

Sorry for my bad english ;)
Thank you for the post, but how the heck did you get that plug out? Its driving me crazy! Is there a tab i cannot see? Thanks

When you click on the light will the foot well lights turn on too? Was thinking of placing lights on the exterior of the car and don't want to be driving down the road with the lights on. (Picture explaining my idea)

Sorry to bump up an old thread.

I'm looking to wire in footwell lights so they come and off with the door opening. I see replies to this thread about places to tap in to get a power feed thats not from the upper dome light. But the images are broken so I cannot see where to take the feed from.

Can anyone help me?

My car is a 2010 Mazda 3 MPS

Thanks :)

You should be able to get the info from the instructions for the footwell lighting kit. I'm not at home right now to get it for you, but maybe you can do a search and find the instructions somewhere.

I just did this in my car a week ago.

I tapped into the map lights using an electro tap of the red (positive) and yellow (negative) wires. You need to remove the dome light housing and the wires will be exposed. This way your footwell lights will act in the same way as your dome lights.

I found which wires to tap into using the official Mazda instructions for the footwell lighting kit that they sell. It also helped me know where to drill the hole in my console for the light switch. 3/4" beveled drill going into your dash... that was fun.

I bought the footwell kit and LED strips from Diode Dynamics.

There are also youtube videos, if you search around, that will illustrate what you need to do. They helped me a lot, as you need to remove the A pillar and run the wiring through there.

I believe he said he does not want to tap into the dome lights area.

If you don't want to do an electro tap...

You can wrap your wiring to the metal prongs that hold the light bulb in place in the dome lights.

Determine which prong/terminal is positive and wrap your positive wire around it. Then wrap the negative wire around the other terminal.

The footwell lights will not be controlled by map lights and act in the same way.

Sorry, I just reread his post. I do not know of any other way to make this work without tapping into the dome light. You would have to do a ton of work with any other method.
