Well it did cost me now close to 1 yr after releasing my iOS Apps to get the iOS experience to the next level into MZD (as Mazda alway promise but never (as its simply not possible without adding hardware) CarPlay) I did not reverse engineer the complete thing and got something nice to show - keep in mind its complete WIP first beta that is actually running - its by far not ready for install by "dummy" yet - and it need additional hardware so lets start with a nice picture

Currently its running in my Mazda CX5 (Facelift 2015) as well as in my gf Mazda CX3, it would work in any Mazda that is equipped with a MZD informtaiment System on any firmware version

The video show the first running beta tonight - I ll upload some more deeper in look videos the upcoming days (need to sort some of my code etc)

https://youtu.be/WpQvz2DZa5k

Some Infos

- works in any MZD equipped Mazda
- need additional hardware

if you have any questions let me know

Looks like you figured out why Mazda has not rolled out their CarPlay /AA support yet - it is not about infotainment software update, it requires additional hardware. I am afraid to say that Mazda is scared to death to release CarPlay support if it requires additional hardware. I'll tell you why:

Mazda sold 1.25 mln sold in the US since 2014. Imagine CarPlay /AA installation takes them 30 min... I think getting a faulty Takata airbag replaced is easier. People will line up for CarPlay installation and it will hurt Mazda second time: first for not having CarPlay from day 1 and second for not being able satisfy installation demand.

What's an average age of a Mazda owner? If younger that on avg, than Mazda is wasted because 4 out 10 owners will want CarPlay /AA badly and now!

What I wanted to say... time to go buy an OEM SD card for navigation and calm down...

So let me add a few more words:

Yes Mazda ll never add something like this - this is a total "hack" that include some hardware ESP that emulate the Apple CarPlay Auth. this is normally done by a Secure Enclave on the CPU on the MZD so by Apples design - so normally Mazda would have to replace the complete MZD (<3000€).

My hardware is based on 4 different chips - the ESP to do the Auth check, a Audio Chip, a SOC and some other stuff to handle the connection to the MZD.
The hardware fits between the connection of the Car -> MZD Cabels and is more or less a plug and play (just power need to be installed)

It offer all nativ CarPlay functions and is connected via AUX to the Car (BT ll be possible with the new Audio Chip I going to get within the next 2 weeks).

Right now its fully touch / Siri based but i m working on the code for the "Joystick" Controls currently (thats why it called beta :p).
You can switch between the new system (inclusive CarPlay) and normal MZD in below 1sec actually the MZD is still running you just switch the video sources so the MZD still run in background.

I m currently checking out to get this thing out of beta to then check options to create more of these (right now only 2 systems where created - for my CX5 and the CX3 of my girlfriend).

It was very expensive and difficult to install?

Enviado desde mi iPhone utilizando Tapatalk
it ll be around 600€ after all I think installing is not really hard, it is just connected in-between the cables with plug and play :)
But the price might change these are just my personal prices in mass production (100units) the price might be cheaper

How was Hyundai/Kia able to release a retroactive CP update for their infotainment system? Did they predict in advance that they would be releasing such an update and then put the necessary hardware in the car to be activated later?
