After I fill up my tank it usually reads around 400 miles till empty, but one time it said 485! Does it maybe base it off your driving habits or your average mpg's that are currently used? What does your car show on your fill ups?

one week new 2010 3s atx

we dumped stock oil for valvoline conventional 5-20 at 100 miles on odo, than tanked with Shell and in city rush hour driving got 210 miles on this tank with half of tank left and mpg listed as 26.1mpg

hope for 350 miles from a tank

how many gallons to you need to fill up from empty (light on)?

I'll post up in a few days but currently at 244 miles with two bars left. This is our first tank of gas from last Friday and a good 170 of those miles are city.

Mine usually says 435 but goes as low as 380 until empty and with a commute that is mainly highway miles I have gone to 1 bar with it saying 15 miles left. At that point with one bar left I had gone 410 miles.

yeah, i'm thinking it bases it off your average. my average went up and so did my range. shit tricks you into thinking you got more gas though. just turns out my half-way point is just a greater number now.

you got me as to why it fluctuates though. http://mazda3revolution.com/forums/2010-mazda-3-discussion/1524-miles-left-range.html

I don't trust that range thing. I go by the bars on the fuel gauge. When it gets to 2 bars I fill up.

I dont trust it either, I was just curious as to why it can very almost 100 on a tank right after a fill up. But overall it seems to be pretty accurate.

the light comes on when you get down to one bar on fuel gauge. normally that means 2 gallons left...but i'm not sure if they base it on that or the gauge itself.
I believe it is based on the actual guage. The numbers in the MID are not base on anything concrete from what I can tell.

Case in point...

This weekend I drove from St Louis to Chicago and back. I averaged 32Mpg the entire distance. On my way home, the light came on at one block left on the guage. My MID told me I had 32 Miles to empty. However, I drove an additional 15 miles to my home gas station and put 12 gallons in the tank. At the gas station the MID said 24 miles left. With two gallons left at the average mileage I should have had around 60.

The gas gauge itself isn't that accurate. I've driven 30 miles on the gas light, maybe 15 with no bars at all and still ended up putting in less than 13.5 gallons. According to the manual there is a 14.5 gallon gas tank for 2L engines. While I suspect that last gallon is reserve it means I could have gone another 30 miles.

Usually hit between 13 and 14 gallons filling up when all the bars on the gauge are gone, this time of year that's in the 340-350 mile range.
