I currently have my first service appointment booked with Mazda next weds. I am confused on what I need to have checked to keep my warranty valid. I can check things like the windshield washer fluid by myself, but I am wondering what you guys get checked during these appointments?

Does this service appointment have to be done at Mazda? Can I have my local garage take a look at this without affecting the warranty?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Any garage can do the service. In fact, you can do it yourself and still keep the warranty intact (keep receipts and document services done, dates, etc.)

As per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, you cannot be denied warranty coverage based on services completed outside the dealership. Mazda would need to prove something you did caused the failure to deny warranty.
