My reverse does this too! My friends always give me shit for it, but sometimes I'll press the clutch in and it just won't connect all the way through. I have it put it into neutral and clutch in again and try again. It's weird because it's only when I start the car.
Yeah I have a brand new 2011 mz3s hatch. And I've been having the same issues. And like you said, my buddy constantly flips me shit for it saying I'm just stupid and can't drive. I've never grinded gears in any mt I've driven until now. Not sure what it is causing it but it almost feels like the clutch just isn't grabbing. I have most of my issue when I'm just casually driving, only run into it a couple times when I'm really running it. Mostly happens going to third but lately it's been hitting second too. On rare occasions I experience the feeling of it just refusing to "catch" the gear. Have to return to neutral an hit the clutch again to get it. Hopefully something comes up with Mazda and they will do something to fix it, or at least give us a solution

Hi, having the second gear grind issue too. I recorded it using my phone... quality is not great, but wondering if it sounds familiar to any of you ;)
Yes that is exactly what I'm talking about. Has anyone gotten a response from a dealership yet?

I took it in a few weeks ago. The tech was nice and reasonable. He sent the car out with another tech, instructing him to use the ac (seems to happen more with it on) and do some stop and go driving. He could not reproduce the issue, but he did start a paper trail for me and told me to bring it back if I could somehow reproduce the issue for him.

I'll be bringing it back in on the 16th. If the noise I posted matches what's been going on for any of you, please confirm; it will help our case.

Thanks!

I'm with everyone...I can have the clutch all the way down, and shift fast/slow (doesn't matter) and it will randomly grind. It always goes in, but with complaint. It doesn't matter if I pull hard, go easy, fast, slow; it is just 100% random.

Only shift 1-2 for me.

What a difference between brands... I had a problem with my 06 G35 doing this and rather than question the clutch or the driver, the dealer said the synchro was going out and replaced the whole transmission, and installed a racing clutch for free (I provided the part) since they already had the transmission dropped.

I just drove a 2012 corvette grand sport no problems with the gears there it was easier to drive than my speed

i am just now having the second gear issue i had some grinding before but now there are times where it will absolutly not go into second unless i go into first or 3rd and i have the short shift plate jbr and i have tuned the shifter so maybe i need to tweak that more any thoughts from anyone?

I had a problem with the JBR plate on...once I took it off, it was back to normal. I've since switched to another shift plate and I'm happy with it.

It's weird, because the JBR plate wasn't hitting anything

What other plate did u use

If your car is actually missing a gear, Mazda will warranty it. A second gen speed had the same problem on the MOCC forums where he would push it into third i believe and it would just pop out.

I don't think that's the problem but it's possible I'm gonna remove the plate today and see if the problem persists

No problem.....hopefully it won't come back...it hasn't for me.

OK, I've had this second gear grinding problem for a while and I took it to the dealership this morning. I took the service manager for a ride to show him what happens during hard acceleration when shifting from 1st to 2nd. It also does it off and on during regular driving, but I can almost always duplicate the problem during hard acceleration. When it first happened, he said I was shifting before the clutch was engaged, so I let him drive it. The first time it didn't happen. The next three times it did, so he agreed that there was a problem. After waiting for about an hour and a half, he came back and told me that they had tried to make some adjustments, but that it didn't work. He said my syncros had little small groves in them and he ordered replacements under warranty. I just wanted to pass this on.

Just had my2011 speed3 into dealer for refusing to go in or out of gear with 640 miles on it. verdict - slave cylinder needed to be replaced! will see if it is indeed fixed!!

9-3-11 Mazda got involved due to dealer being inept at repair. Mazda replaced the clutch disc as this had "disentigrated" and the debris had caused the failure to shift thru blockage. All was covered by mazda not the dealership. Everything appears to be ok now.

Complete transmission replacement

The Mazda service manager left me a voicemail the other day. When I called back, he said that my transmission was in and that he wanted to schedule an appointment to get it installed. I said, don't you mean that my syncro is in? He said that it was a complete transmission. They contacted Mazda's Tech Line before ordering the syncro. They told him that they wanted my transmission back so that they could investigate the problem. He said they had sent a brand new transmission instead of just the syncro. I made an appointment and had in installed on Tuesday. Got the car back on Wednesday and it feels brand new. When I picked it up, I mentioned that there were lots of people having this same issue. I even printed out this thread to show him. He said that was the first time they have run into this issue.

I've driven manual transmission cars almost exclusively for 30 years and I can tell you for sure that this transmission wasn't abused. This is a real problem, so don't let them give you any crap about it being the clutch, or about it being caused by abuse. There are too many people having the same problem for it to be driver error or abuse.

My car is currently at my dealer. Dropped it off last night for an oil change and made a note that I still have soft grinding in second gear occasionally. My awesome tech there took it for a spin this morning and noticed the same thing happening. My service adviser called to let me know Mazda of Canada wants them to take my transmission apart and see what it needs. Hopefully I don't get stuck with a massive bill if they deem it to be abuse, but I'm very confident in my dealership to stand behind me. I will update hopefully this afternoon once they get the tranny out of the car. It has happened ever since I brought it home. I mainly wanted to create a paper trail with Mazda but my dealership has certainly gone above and beyond so far. Great guys at Northwood Mazda in Barrie.

Edit: 41,800KMS on the car.
