Originally from PA. Living in Virginia now. I’m a diesel guy, but drove an old Mazda for years and loved it. It was a 1990 MX6.. only thing wrong with it was it didn’t use diesel fuel... ;).
Here now because my son got himself a 2010 Mazda 3 with the 2.0. It was used when he bought it and the engine didn’t last long before it threw a connecting rod. Big hole in the block and 2 bent valves.
The replacement engine was from a salvage yard and upon inspection, it turned out to be short for this world also. Bad compression in one cylinder and the whole engine was full of carbon. So the rest of the pistons were crying for help also.
So here I am. Looking for information to rebuild it.

Welcome to the forum. Nice that you have enough technical knowledge to help your son out. I would look for a used Speed3 engine as they have more heavy duty parts due to turbo charging and if you are planning on rebuilding an engine a Speed3 would be the way to go. Good luck on whatever you decide.
