So I am thinking about moving from California to Hawaii (Oahu) and wanted to know if there are any certain car laws that I should be aware of. My car is lowered and has a corksport exahust but does not have the racepipe. Any other things I should be aware of? Also hows the Mazda scene down there? haha

I live in Hawaii. And I have a gen1 the laws are kind of strict you need recon and safety done. Safety is pretty easy but recon is difficult to go if your car is super stiff.

live on Oahu...before I bought my '17 gt hatch, I had a scion xb (1st gen),lowered with H&R springs, front frame brace, rear sway bar, koni shocks, and was scared about going to get my reconstruction decal (1x charge...forgot as to price as it was about 4 years ago...think it was $25).

You will need this reconstruction permit paperwork if and when you must do your annual safety check...no recon paperwork, they won't pass your annual safety check...You present this recon permit paperwork with your proof of current no-fault insurance and current registration paperwork...no SMOG tests here in Hawaii...

do have to watch out for tint (illegal/dark)...as regular passenger vehicles have a max of 35 % light transmittance, cannot be lower, or you MAY be cited by Honolulu Police Department (HPD). On the books, it does say they may cite you up to almost $300 per window, but have not heard anyone being punished that badly...

but back to getting the reconstruction permit...with all the talk about how people say it was hard to get and they were strict, I saw what they did, and really the only thing I saw them do was take measurements of the top side of the front and rear bumper...I told myself, is/was that it???

perhaps it had something to do with my age (mid 50s then), and/or 'it's just a scion xB'...I don't know...but it *for me* was quite easy...

As for the mazda scene... i'd say it's non-existent...don't know of any mazda 3 clubs...have not seen any rides of mazdas going past...

Recon is only needed when you drop your vehicle, do engine modifications besides the basic intake or go 2" bigger in rim size than what was factory equipped.

You can get away with coilovers adjusted back to "stock-ish" height depending where you go. There are a few places, which can't be mentioned, where you can go with recon & they'll pass you for double the price, sometimes triple depending on the extent of your modifications.

Tint laws for sedans & hatchbacks are no less than 35% light transmission all around with a threshold of -4%. CUVs, SUVs, Minivans & Trucks are 35% on the fronts & no limit on the rear doors or windows, just for future reference should you get another vehicle.

Knowing this, I still don't give a fahk about recon or tint laws. Lol. My previous 1st gen 6 was dropped on tein springs with 1" in total height cut from the coils with 18x9.5 with a low offset for a 6 stuffed in the fenders with -5 degrees camber in the rear, blacked out all around & HIDs & LEDs all around. It's a luck of the draw on Oahu. Some cops don't care, some get bored & pull you over. I've only been stopped once for my tint when I had the 6. Luckily the cop was nice enough to only charge me for 2 windows. Ticket was $292. Stopped multiple times for no recon on a car that obviously needed it. Always let off with warnings except when I got pulled over for doing 87 in a 45 on the freeway by a rook cop. Being respectful & cooperative goes a long way. Cops will let you off most of the time unless they're riding with someone else or just having a bad day. Also, be forewarned, some cops here drive POVs as cop cars. Met many people from the continental that tripped out on being pulled over by camrys, 4 runners, maximas, altimas, & other vehicles you wouldn't believe. Lol.

The Mazda scene is prett scarce here. There are plenty of modified 6s, 3s, Miatas, SUVs & the sort, but no strong local Mazda community to unite everyone in one event/meet. Tried when I was on the Mazda6Club forums, but I was one of 3 or so members still active on the forum. Might be different on here. Still a 3 day old newborn here. Haha

Hope this helps. My apologies for the painfully long post. Just thought I'd share my run ins &I experience as well with the above mentioned laws/mandatory checks for a vehicle on Oahu.

Aloha
